Job Description

Purpose of the role

To independently assess and make credit decisions for complex financing transactions within the LevFin, SLF, and Hedge Funds sectors, ensuring alignment with the bank's credit risk appetite and regulatory requirements and contribute to the development and implementation of credit risk policies and procedures for the Specialised Sector. 

Accountabilities

  • Analysis of complex financial information and business models of LevFin, SLF, and Hedge Fund clients to assess their creditworthiness, repayment capacity, and potential risks. 
  • Monitoring of the performance of the LevFin, SLF, and Hedge Fund portfolio, identifying and reporting early warning signs of potential credit deterioration. 
  • Evaluation of the risk profile of each application considering factors like industry trends, borrower financials, collateral, and market conditions. 
  • Documentation credit decisions and rationale in a clear and concise manner, adhering to internal audit and regulatory reporting standards. 
  • Development and implementation of strategies to mitigate identified credit risks and optimise portfolio performance.

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.

Purpose of the role

The role, based in New York, is to lead the credit sanctioning responsibilities for the US Commercial Real Estate - Corporate Credit book covered by the Structured Lending & Financing (SLF) Risk team. The successful candidate will report to the SLF Global Head of CRE based in London.

Accountabilities

  • Primary responsibility for the analysis, approval and monitoring of CRE-related corporate lending facilities to “non-traditional” mortgage and equity REITs (e.g. RCF’s and other corporate credit facilities).
  • Analysis of lending applications, financial statements, credit reports, and other relevant documents to assess the borrower's creditworthiness and repayment capacity.
  • Evaluation of the risk profile of each application considering factors like industry trends, borrower financials, collateral, and market conditions.
  • Analyse: (1) the probability of default of the client based on its capitalization structure, ability to generate cash flow to meet debt requirements, and (2) the loss given default/probable recovery of the principal due under the contract. 
  • Perform a thorough review of the client historical operating performance (analysis of balance sheet, cash flow and income statement), ability to achieve projected future results based on a set of variables (including, but not limited to, market conditions, regulations, competition, etc.), review of legal documentation with a specific focus on credit terms.
  • Work with deal teams to perform on-site due diligence with management of lending counterparties, and negotiate credit covenants and other structural terms.
  • Provision of independent credit decisions on lending applications, adhering to established credit policies, risk parameters, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare credit papers for new transactions, annual reviews, and quarterly Watchlist reports for approval through relevant discretion processes and where appropriate, present those credits at relevant Credit Committees. 
  • Monitoring the performance of approved lending , identifying potential risks and early warning signs of stress.
  • Track performance to business plan of the underlying collateral, market trends, portfolio concentrations and the general asset management of the various lending facilities.
  • Maintain continuous Surveillance and oversight responsibilities of existing book, noting any industry or sector trends that may impact current lending. Provide regular senior management information and regulatory updates, including Global/Regional Industry reviews.
  • Lead regulatory information requests and interactions, with a focus on Shared National Credit (SNC) Regulatory Risk Ratings.
  • Maintain integrity of the credit risk function working with Front Office and Senior Risk colleagues to enhance the bank’s aggregate risk appetite and stress loss frameworks applicable to the CRE portfolios in scope.
  • Act as the primary intermediary between clients, business units, auditors and department heads.
  • Working collaboratively with the bank’s other CRE-related functions, such as the Asset Management and Special Asset Management teams. Developing and implementing enhancements related to the monitoring of the portfolio; as well as the appropriate course of action for troubled lending, including workout plans, restructuring, or collections.

Director Expectations

  • Detailed understanding of CRE financing market, the different financing approaches and key analytical techniques across financing structures, assets classes and markets. Whilst the core expertise is based on CRE corporate lending market (e.g. RCF’s and other corporate credit facilities), knowledge and experience in the CRE asset- based financing facilities (e.g. secured mortgage lending, securitisations, loan on loan Warehouse Financing) and CRE- related derivative structures will be viewed favourably.
