About Good Standing
Good Standing is a community organizing platform that uses gamification and social proof to make collective action visible. We help community organizations drive measurable civic participation — turning individual actions into shared momentum that builds real neighborhood power.
We're an early-stage startup with a lean, mission-driven team. You'll be working directly with the founder, who is actively involved in the codebase, but needs a reliable technical partner to accelerate development and help unblock issues as they arise.
The Role
We're looking for a freelance developer to work with us on an hourly, as-needed basis — someone who can jump in when needed, move fast, and take ownership of their work. You don't need to be available full-time, but you do need to be responsive and communicative.
This is a collaborative role. The founder codes too, so you won't be working in a vacuum — but we need someone who can fill gaps, solve problems independently, and bring solid technical judgment to the table.
What You'll Work On
- Building and iterating on features for the Good Standing web platform
- Debugging and unblocking issues in the codebase
- Reviewing and improving existing code
- Database schema design and query optimization in Supabase/PostgreSQL
- Frontend UI work in React/Next.js
- Light DevOps — deployments, environment setup, etc.
Stack
- Frontend: React, Next.js
- Backend/Database: Supabase
- Deployment: Hetzner
What We're Looking For
- Solid experience with React/Next.js and Supabase (ideally)
- Using AI to code and able to execute quickly, with strong debugging skills
- Comfortable working in an existing codebase, not just greenfield projects
- Strong debugging skills — you can read someone else's code and figure out what's going wrong
- Clear communicator — can explain technical decisions in plain language
- Based in NYC or able to meet in person avg 1x a week
- Patient and collaborative — you'll be working with a non-full-time technical founder
- Startup-minded: scrappy, resourceful, and comfortable with ambiguity
Nice to Have
- Experience building civic tech, community platforms, or social impact products
- Familiarity with gamification mechanics or reputation systems
- Web3 or blockchain experience (not required)
Engagement & Compensation
- Hourly, as-needed — we'll define scope and timelines collaboratively
- Rate: $35/hr depending on experience
- Fully remote with occasional in-person in NYC
- Potential for increased hours and longer-term engagement & business partnership as the product grows
How to Apply
Send a short note about yourself, links to relevant work or GitHub, and your hourly rate. We don't need a formal cover letter — just tell us what you've built and why this work interests you.
