About ACLED

Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) is an independent, impartial conflict and protest monitoring organization providing real-time data and analysis on violent conflict and protest in all countries and territories across the world.

The role

The Web Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operational management, technical maintenance, and ongoing improvement of ACLED's main website and associated web properties.

This is a hands-on technical role: the Coordinator works directly in the CMS, troubleshoots issues, implements improvements, and ensures the site is reliable, performant, and well-organized. The Coordinator also sets SEO strategy, manages web analytics and reporting, triages incoming requests from across the organization, and coordinates ad hoc web-related project work.

This role directly supervises one team member, and reports to the Head of the Department.

This position is fully remote. The preferred candidate needs to be based in CET to US Eastern Time zone.

Specific responsibilities

The Web Coordinator will be responsible for the following tasks:

Website Operations & Technical Maintenance

  • Manage the day-to-day operation, performance, and reliability of ACLED's Drupal-based website and associated web properties.
  • Directly troubleshoot and resolve technical issues (in coordination with the development team when necessary), including bug fixes, plugin and module updates, security patches, and CMS configuration.
  • Perform minor frontend customizations and fixes within Drupal's theming and module layer as needed.
  • Monitor site performance, uptime, and Core Web Vitals; identify and address issues proactively before they affect users.
  • Manage version control, staging environments, and deployment processes in coordination with the development team.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG), security protocols, and front-end performance best practices.

SEO Strategy & Implementation

  • Develop and maintain the overall SEO strategy for ACLED's web presence, including keyword strategy, site architecture for discoverability, and coordination with content and publications teams.
  • Conduct site health audits and competitive analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Oversee and support the Digital Officer's execution of ongoing SEO monitoring, technical SEO, and keyword tracking.

Analytics, Reporting & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Produce regular web performance reports and respond to ad hoc analytics requests from across the organization.
  • Manage analytics platforms (e.g. Google Analytics, Looker) and define meaningful metrics to track site engagement, usability, and content effectiveness.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for web-related requests from other departments; triage, prioritize, and coordinate delivery.

Planning, Prioritization & Project Work

  • Triage and prioritize incoming feature requests, improvement proposals, and bug reports.
  • Coordinate and contribute to ad hoc web-related projects (e.g. site redesigns, new tools, content restructuring) as they arise.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Data Science, Development, Analysis, and External Affairs, to translate organizational needs into web deliverables.

Team Management & Enablement

  • Directly supervise the Digital Officer, providing day-to-day guidance, feedback, and professional development support.
  • Contribute to recruitment and onboarding of web team members as needed.
  • Support colleagues across the organization in using the CMS and web tools effectively.

Skills and Experience

ACLED is seeking applicants who have the following skills and experience:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g. computer science, information systems, digital media, communications, or equivalent).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing or coordinating a content-driven website, including hands-on technical work.
  • Strong working experience with Drupal CMS (site building, configuration, module management, theming, and troubleshooting).
  • Strong working experience with PHP (Drupal's underlying language).
  • Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and web standards.
  • Experience with SEO strategy and tools (e.g. Google Search Console, Semrush, Screaming Frog, or similar).
  • Experience with web analytics platforms (e.g. Google Analytics, Looker, or similar).
  • Familiarity with web performance optimization, accessibility standards (WCAG), and security best practices.
  • Experience with version control (Git) and deployment workflows.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring at least one team member.

Preferred

  • Experience with JavaScript and/or front-end frameworks (e.g. React) for web tool development.
  • Familiarity with how third-party platforms (e.g. Salesforce, Mailchimp) integrate with a website, including authentication flows, API connections, embedded forms, and tracking
  • Experience with ContentSquare/Hotjar for UX monitoring and testing.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and hosting infrastructure (e.g. cloud platforms, CDNs).
  • Experience working with CRM or marketing automation platforms.
  • Experience in a mission-driven, research, or data-focused organization.

Terms and Conditions

  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Salary Band: 55,000-60,000 USD/year
