The Vice President, Finance contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by setting financial strategy and direction, and overseeing all financial matters across a complex, globally distributed organization.
The VP Finance role serves as a trusted advisor to the COO and Senior Management Team with the people-leadership skills to build, develop, and steady a multinational finance team across headquarters and country offices.

Medical Teams operates complex program portfolios funded by institutional, restricted and unrestricted donor sources under a low-negotiated indirect cost rate and a funding model that demands disciplined liquidity management and resource allocation.

Strategy & Leadership

  • Provide overarching global finance leadership to the Headquarters and Country Office finance department and all organizational functions including financial grant management and contracts, compliance and audit, insurance/risk management, legal, and strategic planning.
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models, and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
  • Partner with the COO on all operational and strategic issues; provide strategic recommendations to the COO based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis; Engage the finance committee of the Board to develop financial plans/projections and manage the financial/operating model.
  • Analyze business operations to assess and improve effectiveness; assess financial risks and benefits of organization initiatives; improve operational effectiveness by overseeing and developing headquarters support services and extending these services to be fully global and deployable in disaster responses, inclusive of field focused support systems in finance, procurement and supply chain, and compliance and risk.
  • Manage organizational cash flow planning and forecasting; ensure availability of funds as needed.
  • Oversee, manage, and negotiate with all new and existing banking relationships, including corporate card usage.
  • Engage Board’s Treasurer and Finance Committee to ensure sound management and investment of reserves and endowment, in close collaboration with external investment advisory firm.

Funding and Reporting

  • Own the grants & contracts NICRA strategy and both direct and indirect cost recovery, maximizing recovery within donor rules, regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Create, monitor, and report through a timely analytical dashboard and reporting of financial and operational performance metrics, capturing organizational performance and providing critical input into organizational decisions.
  • Provide key finance information to the Board and Senior Management Team to make complex organizational and strategic decisions based on expert analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of data and trends.
  • In collaboration with the Controller and Global Director of Finance, oversee preparation and approval of all financial reports; communicate results; ensure that reports are timely, accurate, and useful to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate all audits and proper filing of tax returns; remain updated on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
  • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function.
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.

Team Management

  • Develop, manage, and develop direct finance staff; guide larger multi-disciplinary teams outside of direct span of control, including matrixed staff in country.
  • Engage the Senior Management Team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures financial solutions that support Medical Teams’ evolving strategy and operational model.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a high-performing, agile organization through effective processes, shared support services, and systems for global operations in developing nations.

Other Duties

  • Ensure the Safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse & Harassment, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding code of conduct and behavior expectations.  
  • Willing and able to deploy to a humanitarian disaster if needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, e.g., economics, accounting, finance, business administration, and public administration/management
  • Valid passport and driver’s license
  • Experience in implementing a financial ERP system

Preferred:

  • Master’s in business administration, finance, or a related field
  • Current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license

EXPERIENCE                                                                                                 

Required:

  • Minimum 12 years’ increasingly responsible work experience in financial management, including senior leadership within an international non-profit of NGO
  • Minimum six years of international work, demonstrated expertise managing accounting system upgrades, and effectively managing across borders and with global funders
  • Experience working with and managing institutional and restricted donor funding, including grant compliance and indirect cost recovery
  • Experience managing external audit, budgeting, and resource development
  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise systems implementations or upgrades, including stabilizing and/or expanding existing projects
  • Experience collaborating with and presenting to a Finance Committee and Board of Directors, as well as  senior teams
  • Strong track record of leading people and organizations through significant, sustained change

Preferred:       

  • Experience working in a medium-size NGO with complex programs and volatile and/or donor-dependent funding models
  • NetSuite (or comparable global ERP) implementation experience
  • Experience living and working in a low resourced country

Compensation: The anticipated hiring range for U.S.-based candidates is $165,000–$180,000 USD annually. Final compensation will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location. While the salary range listed applies to candidates residing in the United States, compensation for candidates located outside the U.S. will be determined using Medical Teams International's international compensation framework and may vary based on local market conditions and organizational compensation practices.
