Summary: 

The Visual Media Producer is responsible for researching, producing, and editing visual content across both internal and external platforms. This role leads video and related visual content development, manages production of internal and external shoots, and edits raw media for posting. This is a hands-on content-creator role for a person with strong editorial, production, and editing skills and experience creating compelling short-form and social media content.

The Visual Media Producer works with the Director, Digital Media and Marketing to produce and edit video and other visual products (including photography) across multiple mediums on internal and external platforms, including social media platforms and HHMI’s website. Primary responsibilities include developing, field producing (including shooting and/or directing small crews), and editing content.

The Visual Media Producer works a three-day hybrid schedule at HHMI's Headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD and reports to Director, Digital Media and Marketing.

This position will remain open until May 21, 2025, at 5:00 PM ET, after which applications will no longer be accepted.

What you will do:

  • Creative Direction: Lead content ideation and design, including scouting locations and stories, contributing to the overall look and feel of the product. A deep understanding of what works well on social media is critical.

  • Pre-production: Develop interview questions, storyboards, scripts, shot lists, and production plan.

  • Field Production: Shoot and/or direct small crews to capture content on internal and external shoots. Manage schedules, budgets, design, scope, and deliverables.

  • Post-Production and Editing: Manage and organize assets and maintain a consistent, accountable, and dependable workflow. Edit pieces, incorporating music, graphics, and narration, as needed. Ensure assets are engaging, compelling, and on-brand.

  • Quality Control: Review and revise drafts based on editorial and scientific feedback to ensure high-quality output that meets project specifications, deadlines, and brand standards. Ensure key project “owners” have the opportunity to review content before final publication/distribution.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with team members across Marketing and Internal Communications, as well as departments outside of Communications, to produce needed content for owned platforms and channels. Ensure all reviews and clearances are executed within deadlines to meet the highest degree of accuracy.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • Five to eight years of experience editing/producing visual products, including video and photography assets.

  • Proven experience as a video producer and editor with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.

  • Proficiency in video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar.

  • Ability to capture and edit photography.

  • Experience with video and photography production equipment, including cameras, lighting, and sound/audio gear. Ability to shoot video.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms and their visual requirements.

  • Ability to scope, hire, and manage production teams.

  • Strong understanding of storytelling, visual composition, and pacing.

  • Knowledge of motion graphics and animation.

  • Experience with color grading and audio mixing.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously, often on deadline.

  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Attention to detail and a passion for creativity.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a style that encourages open expressions of ideas and opinions

  • Sound judgment with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$91,742.40 (minimum) - $114,678.00 (midpoint) - $149,081.40 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
