About Moodsearch

Moodsearch is a consumer iOS app for self-reflection and education about mood and the patterns behind it. Users share what is on their mind by text or voice, and the app connects what they share to possible patterns from our library and creates personal summaries. We have raised nearly $4 million and the app is live on the App Store.

Moodsearch is educational and self-reflective. It is not medical, clinical, diagnostic, or therapeutic, and the design should never feel like a health service. Credibility comes from craft, clarity, restraint, and care.

About This Role

Moodsearch has reached a point where the direction and the shape of the product feel right. Now we are investing in the visual layer so the design carries the strength of the idea. We are hiring our first in-house designer to make that happen.

The starting scope is a focused visual refresh, not a redesign and not a UX rethink. The structure of the app stays. Your work is to elevate the look and feel: the app icon, the home screen, onboarding, key product screens, and the matching website, along with a light visual system so the direction extends consistently across the rest of the product.

You will work directly with our CEO, who leads creative direction for the product and holds a clear vision and a high bar. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys that dynamic: bringing ideas, options, and strong craft to the table, then executing the chosen direction quickly and beautifully. You will also work closely with our engineers to ship what you design.

What we want the design to feel like

Credible, personal, and safe, held together. Substantial and premium enough to trust and pay for, while warm, sincere, and built around the person using it. Never clinical, and never childish.

Accountabilities

  • Refresh the visual design of the app icon, home screen, onboarding, and key product screens
  • Design the matching website in the same visual language
  • Explore options across color, typography, iconography, imagery, illustration style, and motion direction, and iterate quickly on feedback
  • Build a light visual system and simple handoff notes so the direction can be applied consistently across the product
  • Maintain visual quality and consistency across the app and website as the product grows

Requirements

  • A portfolio showing polished visual design for digital products, with strong craft in color, typography, layout, and iconography
  • Strong Figma skills and clean, organized files
  • Comfort working under a strong creative vision: contributing ideas and options, taking candid feedback well, and turning revisions around quickly
  • Comfort in a fast-moving, small-team startup where priorities shift
  • Taste that aligns with warm, sincere, premium consumer design
  • Typically 3+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent demonstrated work

Preferred (not required; please apply if you meet the requirements above)

  • Illustration or motion design skills
  • Consumer app experience
  • Website design experience

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $95,000-$130,000. We expect to hire within $95,000-$120,000; up to $130,000 is available where directly relevant experience materially exceeds the core requirements. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage and paid time off.

How to apply

Please email [email protected] with a resume and portfolio link, along with a short note, 200 words or fewer, about one project where you elevated the visual quality of an existing product: where it started, what you changed, and what shipped. Please use the subject line "Visual Designer Application."
