Why This Role Matters
The VDC Engineer plays a critical role in bringing projects to life before construction begins. By leveraging BIM and VDC technologies, this role helps teams identify risks early, improve coordination across disciplines, and ensure projects are built accurately, efficiently, and safely. You’ll collaborate with project teams, designers, and trade partners to turn complex data into clear, actionable insights.
What You’ll Do
As a VDC Engineer, you’ll spend most of your time supporting active project coordination while also contributing to continuous improvement of VDC tools and processes.
Core Responsibilities
- Create, manage, and coordinate BIM models across all project phases, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with project standards
- Develop and modify 3D model elements, including applying materials and textures and generating construction documentation
- Perform advanced clash detection and lead resolution of spatial conflicts across architectural, structural, and MEP systems to prevent field issues and rework
- Create schedules and quantity takeoffs from models to support planning and decision-making
- Support design development by translating concepts into constructible, model-based solutions
- Troubleshoot modeling and coordination challenges, analyzing issues and recommending practical solutions
- Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and internal project teams to align project goals and improve communication
- Support and participate in coordination meetings, including documenting clear and detailed meeting minutes
- Assist with virtual mock-ups and constructability reviews to validate design intent and installation sequencing
- Support the VDC Manager by helping manage the project’s VDC environment and ensuring all modeling and coordination requirements are met
- Provide VDC/BIM technology support to project teams and help drive adoption of tools such as BIM software, AR/VR, and point cloud data
- Stay current on emerging technologies and industry best practices to continuously improve VDC workflows and solutions
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role is measured by both technical results and collaboration:
- High rate of clash identification and resolution prior to construction
- Accuracy of models, including geometric precision and alignment with as-built conditions and required Levels of Detail (LOD)
- Strong model quality, including clean geometry and efficient structure to avoid downstream technical issues
- Consistent production output (models, drawings, analyses) aligned with project schedules
- Strong schedule performance and reliable forecasting of VDC deliverables
- Effective adoption and use of VDC technologies across project teams
- Clear communication and reliable follow-through with stakeholders
