Automotive Used Car Sales Manager Responsibilities and Qualifications:

The Automotive Used Car Sales Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Used Car Department while leading and developing the sales team. This individual will be responsible for managing used vehicle inventory, appraisals, pricing, merchandising, sales performance, and customer satisfaction while helping maximize used vehicle department profitability.

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Used Car Sales Department
  • Lead, coach, motivate, and develop Used Car Sales Consultants
  • Assist Sales Consultants with customer negotiations and closing deals
  • Work closely with customers to provide a professional and exceptional buying experience
  • Monitor daily, monthly, and yearly used vehicle sales goals
  • Track individual and department sales performance
  • Manage used vehicle inventory from acquisition through retail sale
  • Assist with appraising customer trade-in vehicles
  • Evaluate trade-ins based on market conditions, vehicle condition, mileage, equipment, and current inventory needs
  • Monitor inventory levels and assist with determining which vehicles should be acquired or sold
  • Monitor market pricing and competitive used vehicle pricing
  • Assist with setting competitive retail prices for used inventory
  • Review and adjust used vehicle pricing as market conditions change
  • Monitor vehicle age and identify aged inventory that requires immediate attention
  • Work with the Service and Reconditioning Departments to ensure vehicles are repaired and ready for sale
  • Monitor the reconditioning process to help ensure vehicles are completed in a timely manner
  • Monitor online listings and ensure vehicle information, pricing, photos, and descriptions are accurate
  • Review deals for accuracy and completeness before submitting them to the Business Office
  • Ensure all required paperwork and documentation is completed accurately
  • Work closely with the Finance Department to ensure a smooth transition from Sales to Finance
  • Maintain high customer satisfaction and CSI scores
  • Conduct sales meetings and communicate dealership goals, promotions, and sales strategies to the sales team
  • Monitor leads, appointments, showroom traffic, phone calls, and follow-up activities
  • Ensure Sales Consultants properly follow up with internet and phone leads
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training new Sales Consultants
  • Hold Sales Consultants accountable for performance, attendance, customer service, and dealership standards
  • Monitor gross profit, units sold, inventory turn, and overall used vehicle department performance
  • Review sales reports and identify opportunities to improve department profitability
  • Stay up to date on current used vehicle market trends and consumer demand
  • Monitor competitor inventory and pricing
  • Maintain an organized and professional showroom and sales lot
  • Assist with maintaining an efficient and profitable used vehicle inventory
  • Participate in manufacturer and dealership training programs as required
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment
  • Report any situation that could jeopardize the safety, welfare, or integrity of the dealership, customers, or employees
  • Follow all federal, state, and local laws, as well as company policies and procedures

Automotive Used Car Sales Manager Requirements:

  • Previous automotive sales or sales management experience preferred
  • Previous used vehicle management experience strongly preferred
  • Previous dealership experience is a plus
  • Experience with vehicle appraisals and trade-ins preferred
  • Strong understanding of used vehicle pricing and market trends
  • Knowledge of used vehicle inventory management and merchandising
  • Strong knowledge of automotive sales and dealership operations
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Strong negotiation and closing skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment
  • Ability to coach, train, and motivate a sales team
