Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs clinical assessment, diagnostic sonography examinations, invasive ultrasound procedures, doppler vascular examinations, deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as required.  
  • Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications following exam specifications  
  • Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.  
  • Evaluates technical quality of films to obtain representative images of pathogenic conditions; processes film in accordance with standard procedures or techniques.  
  • Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician when needed.  
  • Reviews and processes images for storage by ensuring the proper views were obtained according to department protocol.  
  • Performs all quality control checks, as prescribed.  
  • Instructs and prepares patients for imaging examinations.  
  • Practices consistent patient safety measures ensuring the right patient, right dose/rate and right procedure/site/side.  

Regulatory Requirements

  • Completes annual educational requirements within the assigned time frame.  
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and Joint Commission regulations related to their department and, as appropriate, to the hospital.  
  • Current certification by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in Sonography; ARRT (S), *ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) or CCI (Cardiovascular Credentialing International)
  • *For ARDMS, fully registered means certification in both physics and a body part.  
  • Successful completion of an approved program in ultrasound technology.  
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification  
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

Language Skills

Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.    

Computer Skills  

Demonstrates basic computer skills and knowledge consistent with the needs of their department.    

Safety/Environment

  • Knows the limitations of their license/certifications and does not practice outside these limitations.  
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment and department  
  • Responsible for the safe handling of equipment as well as maintaining safety for themselves.  
  • Knows the proper procedure for calling codes and the proper response for each code according to department protocol (i.e. fire, lock down, infant abduction, bomb threat, etc.)  
  • Knows the proper procedure for reporting incidents involving the patient, visitor or employee.   
  • Knows where to find SDS information when needed.  
  • Is aware of hazards and hazardous materials and how to maintain a safe environment.

Skills Required

  • Current ARRT certification in Sonography, ARDMS certification, or CCI certification
  • For ARDMS certification, registration in both physics and a body part
  • Successful completion of an approved ultrasound technology program
  • Current BCLS certification
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English
  • Basic computer skills appropriate to the department
