Role Overview
The Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) is seeking a part-time Translator with expertise in Persian/Urdu, and working knowledge of Shahmukhi script for a 5 year commitment.
SikhRI connects people with the teachings of Sikhi and strengthens the bonds of the Sikh community around the world by offering courses and seminars in a variety of mediums. Our goal is to make Sikh education accessible to anyone, help more people to understand the principles of Sikhi, and present the Guru Granth Sahib the way it is.
The Translator will work closely with researchers and strategic advisors on the Sikh History Project (SHP). SHP aims to make history open-access, to offer synthesis and a Gurmat-based approach to historical analysis for deeper and more nuanced understandings. The translator will produce high-quality translations of historical and theological texts, contributing to a Gurmat-informed narration of Sikh history for a broad non-academic audience.
Key Responsibilities
Collaboration with Research Team
- Work with researchers to:
- Identify texts and excerpts for translation
- Estimate translation timelines and efforts
- Incorporate feedback from Subject Matter Experts and Advisors
- Support the development of Factsheets on Gurus, key figures, and historical events; Analytical papers and articles.
Translation of Primary Sources
- Translate texts from the 1400s to the 1800s from Braj OR Persian into clear, accurate, and accessible English.
- Work on materials, including but not limited to:
- Early Sikh literature
- Court poetry, manuscripts, and historical narratives
- Ensure translations preserve:
- Linguistic nuance and poetic structure where relevant
- Historical and cultural context
- Gurmat perspective on Sikh history
- Flag ambiguous or contested passages and collaborate on interpretation
- Ensure adherence to project-wide translation standards, maintain consistency in terminology across texts and time periods.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in Braj, OR Persian
- Strong command of English with the ability to produce clear and readable prose
- Ability to read Gurmukhi
- Experience working with historical texts and manuscripts
- Familiarity with South Asian historical contexts
- Familiarity with Sikh history
Skills Required

- Strong command of English with ability to produce clear, readable prose
- Ability to read Gurmukhi
