About the job

At MECCA, quality isn’t a phase we bolt on at the end — it’s built in from the very first conversation. As our new Test Lead, you’ll be the senior quality voice across five squads (three web, two app), shaping how testing gets done long before a line of code is written.

This is a shift-left role at heart. You’ll be in the room during discovery and design, asking the right questions early so performance, accessibility, resilience and automation are planned for up front — not scrambled together at the end. You’ll guide a team of Test Analysts and Test Engineers across a 50/50 split of manual and automated testing, and work closely with our Automation Lead, Tech Leads and Product Managers to keep quality front and centre in everything we ship.

It’s a genuinely hybrid role — part hands-on practitioner, part people leader, part quality strategist — sitting right at the centre of communication across our web and app squads.

The Role You Could Play

  • Act as the senior quality lead across 5 squads (3 web, 2 app), directly guiding and mentoring a team of Test Analysts and Test Engineers.

  • Get involved early — join discovery and design conversations to proactively identify quality risks before they become problems.

  • Champion a shift-left approach to testing, planning up front for performance, accessibility, resilience and automation.

  • Partner closely with our Automation Lead as an enabler for automation, performance and accessibility testing initiatives.

  • Own quality outcomes across a 50/50 split of manual and automated testing, adjusting the balance as projects demand.

  • Be the central point of communication for testing — building trusted relationships with Tech Leads and Product Managers and influencing decisions rather than just reporting bugs.

  • Stay hands-on with automation and CI/CD in an agile delivery environment.

  • Bring observability practices into the team’s testing approach, working alongside engineering to catch issues before customers do.

  • Support quality across our current wave of projects, including the website PDP uplift (with AI-assisted product Q&A, suggestions and interactivity) and fulfilment initiatives such as parcel lockers and estimated delivery date improvements.

What You Will Bring

  • Strong experience in QA/testing, including 5+ years working as a Test Lead, guiding and developing other testers.

  • A genuine early-engagement mindset — proactive, curious, and comfortable asking the right questions from day one of discovery.

  • People management experience, and confidence guiding a team spread across multiple squads.

  • Hands-on automation experience, including Playwright, and API testing experience with Postman.

  • Exposure to observability tooling (e.g. Datadog) and an interest in using it to strengthen the team’s testing approach.

  • Comfort working in agile delivery environments with CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Azure DevOps).

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence Tech Leads and Product Managers, not just flag defects.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple squads and priorities at once.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in retail or eCommerce environments.

  • Experience with mobile app release testing and processes.

  • Accessibility testing experience, including WCAG standards.

  • Practical experience with AI-assisted testing tools or approaches.

  • Exposure to performance testing.
