A fellowship for indie-book culture builders who want to help great authors find new readers
Tertulia is building the best place on the internet to discover your next favorite book, and we think some of the best books still don’t get the spotlight they deserve. We’re looking for someone who knows and loves the indie book world to help us change that.
The Tertulia Indie Author Fellowship is a remote, part-time role (15 hours/week) for a three-month term beginning September 15. You’ll work directly with our team and indie authors to experiment with new ways to help readers discover books, from editorial lists and author recommendations to social content and community-building.
What you’ll do
- Curate: Create reading lists that spotlight indie, hybrid, and small-press authors, organized around genres, moods, trends, hidden gems, debuts, and other discovery hooks.
- Connect authors with readers: Invite indie authors to share the books they recommend, helping us build an ongoing “Authors Recommend” series and other ways for readers to discover books through authors they trust.
- Create social content: Make short-form content for TikTok, Instagram, and other channels, including author spotlights, “why you should read this” posts, indie staff picks, and ideas inspired by what’s happening on BookTok.
- Build relationships: Become a friendly, credible point of contact for indie authors, small presses, and people across the wider indie-book community.
- Learn what works: Keep an eye on how content performs and what the community responds to, then use those insights to help shape what we try next.
- Support Tertulia for Authors: Help us highlight authors in the Tertulia community, including creative ways to tell their stories and show how they’re using Tertulia’s tools.
You might be a great fit if you:
You’re genuinely plugged into indie-book culture. Maybe you’ve self-published yourself, maybe you’re a BookToker or Bookstagrammer, or maybe you’re simply the person constantly telling everyone about indie books they’ve never heard of.
You’ve created book-related content somewhere, whether that’s TikTok, Instagram, a newsletter, a blog, or another platform. You can write a sharp hook or book recommendation in a few sentences, you’re comfortable reaching out to authors, and you’re excited by the chance to help develop something new rather than simply execute a set playbook.
What you’ll get
- $1200/month stipend
- $100/month Tertulia credit to spend on books
- Early copies and advance reader access when available
- Bylines and experience working with one of the most dynamic teams in book publishing
To apply
Send us a short note to [email protected] telling us why you’re interested, including:
- Three indie books you love and a sentence or two about why you’d recommend each one.
- Links to your social profiles and any book content you’re particularly proud of: TikTok, Instagram, a blog, newsletter, or anything else.
- A few thoughts on indie book discovery: What excites you about it? Where do you think it’s being done well today, and where is there room to do something better?
We’ll follow up with selected applicants for a short conversation.
