Our Telecommunications team develops, manages, operates, and maintains VELCO’s enterprise networks that provide critical communication services.
How you will make an impact
In addition to our transmission assets, VELCO owns and operates a 1,500 mile statewide fiber optic network and a statewide radio network. In this role, you will support and maintain infrastructure that is essential and relied upon on a 24x7 basis.
VELCO is installing roughly 914 miles of fiber optic cable onto the distribution system, connecting approximately 68 substations and 480 DER sites by 2027. This work will provide a secure and reliable communication network for data transmission of Vermont's clean energy resources.
The Telecom Network Engineer will initiate network design and planning and integration support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging and problem solving and appropriately engages in the technical activities of a telecommunication systems administration support team, including upgrading and disaster recovery plans.
Responsibilities
Further develops a diversified knowledge of carrier class telecommunication engineering practices and standards in system designs and operation.
Designs, manages, and operates complex enterprise networks. (Enterprise Wi-Fi, Core network, DC fabric, edge network)
Participates in the management of a Network Operating Center monitoring TDM, Carrier Ethernet, and proprietary networks using SNMP monitoring tools.
Actively monitors and conducts trend analysis for telecommunication networks to proactively identify performance issues ensuring highest availability of critical networks.
Supports infrastructure that is relied upon on a 7x24 basis.
Provides engineering and technical assistance and support to field personnel at radio sites, distribution utilities and substations throughout the State of Vermont; travel required.
Collaborate with and support all members of the Telecommunications Group.
Provides a high level of customer service to internal and external customers.
Who you are
A Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
Minimum of 5 years related technical experience required. Preference will be given to candidates with Ciena's products and technologies.
Knowledge & Skills
Proficiency planning, designing, implementing and managing highly available enterprise network technology at VELCO. Demonstrated experience with network security, firewalls, related protocol analysis and SNMP is desired. Possessing an understanding of telecommunication transport technologies and having an understanding of analog and digital voice communications protocols are expected. Working knowledge of Ciena, Cisco, Juniper, Aruba and Checkpoint. This role requires strong written and verbal communication skills and a self-motivated individual willing to work in a fast-paced, innovative and rewarding environment.
Compensation Range:
$67,828.80 - $106,132.00 - $144,435.20/salaryThis compensation range represents the minimum, midpoint and maximum pay for this position. Individual offers will be based on various factors including, but not limited to, qualifications, education, skills, competencies, and experience. Please note that most offers for new employees fall under the midpoint of the range, allowing room for continued salary growth. Base pay is just one component of our total compensation package, which may also include comprehensive benefits, generous paid time off and incentive compensation (bonus) potential.
