Job Description

The Materials, Chemical and Computational Science Directorate at the National Renewable Energy lab is hiring a full-time technologist at the Technologist II or Technologist III level with expertise in conducting scientific research and process and equipment development. The candidate will work within a larger effort focused on reducing the cost of III-V photovoltaics through the development of lower cost growth methods, effective device exfoliation and substrate reuse, and lower cost processing toward commercialization. 

This position will involve:

• Designing and performing scientific experiments in conjunction with other researchers
• Developing and implementing procedures related to the operation and maintenance of equipment and the growth, processing, and measurement of semiconductor devices
• Operating and maintaining complex semiconductor growth equipment, including diagnosing problems as well as improving capabilities
• Coordinating research efforts and communication between multiple research groups
• Mentoring postdocs, graduate students, and technicians

Basic QualificationsLevel II:
Relevant Master's Degree. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 1 or more years of experience.
Level III:
Relevant PhD. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 1 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 3 or more years of experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

Level II:

• Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills
• Knowledge of the scientific method
• Knowledge of complex equipment and processes, including logic control systems (hardware and software), gas delivery systems, power systems, and vacuum systems
• Detail oriented, safety minded, strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Experience working with industrial partners to solve equipment challenges
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Level III:

• Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills
• Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of the scientific method
• Deomonstrated experience of complex equipment and processes, including logic control systems (hardware and software), gas delivery systems, power systems, and vacuum systems
• Detail oriented, safety minded, strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Autonomy working with industrial partners to solve equipment challenges
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

• Firm grounding in the scientific method and experience with experimental science
• Experience with semiconductor deposition equipment or other complex equipment
• Cleanroom semiconductor processing experience
• Experience with equipment design, computational modeling, computer programming, or database management

Job Profile: Research Technologist II / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900
