SMX is currently seeking a detail-oriented and technically savvy Technical Writer to join our dynamic AWS Cloud Consulting team. This role bridges the gap between engineering and documentation, ensuring our cloud solutions are clearly communicated, well-structured, and aligned with both technical and business requirements. This is a remote position supporting a Boston, MA based team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Create and maintain technical documentation for AWS cloud architectures, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure components.
• Develop standard architecture artifacts including solution overviews, component descriptions, and integration flows.
• Collaborate with senior architects to design technical diagrams using established templates and tools (e.g., Lucidchart, Visio).
• Document Infrastructure as Code (IaC) workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and automation strategies.
• Translate business requirements into clear technical narratives and traceable documentation.
• Maintain version-controlled documentation repositories (e.g., GitHub, Confluence).
• Assist in the creation of client-facing deliverables such as runbooks, onboarding guides, and operational manuals.
• Ensure documentation aligns with industry standards and internal best practices.
• Participate in project planning sessions to understand scope and contribute to documentation strategy.
Required Technologies and Skills:
• Proven experience as a Technical Writer in a cloud or software engineering environment.
• Strong understanding of AWS services, cloud architecture patterns, and deployment automation.
• Familiarity with IaC tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD concepts.
• Ability to work with architects to visualize and diagram complex systems.
• Experience creating documentation for new cloud builds, including architecture decks and operational guides.
• Solid grasp of business analysis fundamentals and translating requirements into technical deliverables.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS SharePoint).
• Experience with diagramming tools (e.g., Lucidchart, Visio).
• Comfortable working in agile environments and managing multiple priorities.
Preferred skills and qualifications:
• AWS Certification (e.g., Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect Associate)
• Experience in a consulting or client-facing role
• Familiarity with compliance and security documentation (e.g., SSAE, FedRAMP, HIPAA)
• Exposure to other cloud platforms (Azure, GCP) is a plus
