The Role

Applied R&D (AR) consists of target-oriented research either with the goal of solving a particular problem / answering a specific question or for multi-discipline design, development, and implementation of hardware, software, and systems including maintenance support. Supplies techno-economic consulting to clients. AR work is characterised by its detailed and complex nature in order to systematically combine existing knowledge and practices to further developing and incrementally improving products, operational processes, and customer-specific feature development.

General R&D Management (GRM) comprises the management of the engineering organisation which includes development and revision of new and existing products or services. Covers monitoring of different engineering dimensions and priority setting and conflict resolution between the different organisational dimensions (if any). Contains formulation of long-term objectives, implementation of policies, and monitoring of engineering budget and development schedule. Comprises optimisation of product delivery and involvement in patent search, technology surveillance, technology trends, and is main contributor in innovation management of the company.

  • Interprets critical internal or external business issues and develops innovative solutions that help to sustain competitive advantage.
  • Defines processes and standards.
  • Uses knowledge on how the job contributes to the corporate goals as well as knowledge of industry and competitive landscape to increase own effectiveness.
  • Influences strategic decisions within professional area that affect the performance of the subfunction (EG a subset of a function, typically consisting of several areas with independent budgets).
  • Solves highly complex or novel problems based on sophisticated analytical thought and complex judgment.
  • Independently develops concepts to set the professional direction of own organizational unit.
  • Acts as a senior subject matter expert, typically at a global or regional level, in many organizational units the most senior internal expert who serves as best practice / quality resource and is an acknowledged authority both within and outside own organizational unit.
  • Often leads functional teams or projects with considerable resource requirements, risk, and complexity, handles day-to-day staff management issues, including resource management and allocation of work.
  • Experience working on 1830 transmission subsystem
  • Proven track record in estimating and planning complex features from high level requirements

Impact is short-term through individual and team contributions. Scope is primarily within own subject area in a function/unit. Actions and errors impact on program, project or function. Provides measurable input into new products, processes, standards or operational plans in support of the organisation's business strategies, with some impact on business unit/ function overall results.

Increased awareness of and involvement outside of own subject area. Distills big picture. Makes decisions about and prioritizes own work. Managerial/Supervisory: Clear managerial responsibilities for people. Typically first level of solid line management. Interprets policies. Ensures existing plans are put into operation. Executes and/or oversees processes to meet customer needs. Responsible for analysis, design & development of policies, plans, programs.

Carries out specialised activities/projects according to general direction. Influences others to support decisions. Works mostly independently. Analyze situations or data that requires review of relevant factors. Solutions can often be checked and proved. Demonstrates success in multiple roles and is adaptable to manage complex changing business environments.

Communicates with parties within and outside of own job function and teams, and typically has responsibilities for communicating with parties external to the organisation, which may include customers or vendors.Works to influence others to accept job function's view/practices and agree/accept new concepts, practices, and approaches.Has cross-cultural knowledge and global mindset Requires ability to communicate with executive leadership regarding matters of significant importance to the organisation. May conduct briefings with senior leaders within the job function. May at times be required to negotiate regarding operational issues.

  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science/Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required
  • Proven track record in estimating and planning complex features from high level requirements
  • 15+ years of experience in developing or managing features for 1830 transmission sub-system, line cards and application software is required
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with the Product Line Managers to plan for the upcoming release content
  • Ability to effectively track development team progress, generate defect and progress reports and clearly present the status
  • Interpret critical internal or external business issues and develop innovative solutions that help to sustain competitive advantage.
  • Plan and negotiate the development team tasks and deliverables between the feature teams and products.
