Job Title: Technical Designer (freelance)

Department: Product Development

Reports to: Director - Global Sourcing & Product Development

Hours Available: M-F 8:30am-5:30pm EST (1-hour lunch break)

Physical Address: 200 Sea Ln, Farmingdale, NY 11735

Salary Range: $52,250 - $96,000 (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law)

Summary:As BEDGEAR continues to innovate and introduce new products, we are seeking a skilled Technical Designer to join our team and contribute to the development and refinement of our product line. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in working various fabrics, including knits, wovens, jackets, tops, bottoms and accessories.

Essential Functions (include but not limited to):

  1. Measurement and Review:
    • Accurately measure and review each Men's, and Women's clothing item and accessory in the product range.
    • Ensure precise documentation of measurements for reference and analysis.
  2. Fit Model Evaluation:
    • Conduct fittings on an external fit model for each product category.
    • Assess the fit of knits, wovens, jackets, tops, bottoms, and accessories making necessary adjustments to enhance the overall comfort and appearance.
  3. Pattern Creation/Correction:
    • Develop and/or correct paper patterns based on the fitting evaluations.
    • Collaborate with the design team to ensure patterns align with the desired aesthetic and functionality of the products.
  4. Tech Pack Creation:
    • Generate comprehensive tech packs, including detailed specifications, construction details, and material requirements.
    • Work closely with the production team to communicate technical aspects clearly.
  5. Grading Rules:
    • Establish and implement grading rules for Men's and Women's clothing items to ensure consistent sizing across the product range.
  6. Documentation of Specifications:
    • Define and document the required specifications and tolerance levels for each Point of Measurement (POM) and product item.
    • Organize and record this information in an Excel document for easy reference.
  7. Communication:
    • Provide regular updates on the progress of each item to the design and production teams.
    • Collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders throughout the design and refinement process.
  8. Fit Approval:
    • Attend follow-up fittings as required for the next round of product samples.
    • Collaborate with the team to address any additional adjustments needed for fit approval.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and have IDs needed to verify.
  • English proficient (reading, writing, speaking, comprehension)
  • Computer savvy; proficient with Microsoft Office

Sensory Requirements: Should have working use of hearing and vision with or without the use of corrective lenses/hearing aids to be able to read paperwork, work on a computer screen for an extended period of time, and frequently speak on the phone.

Environmental: N/A - indoor office environment

Education/Experience/License Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Technical Designer in the fashion or related industry.
  • Proficient in garment measurements, fitting techniques, and pattern development.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording measurements and specifications.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Flexibility to work on-site at our office in Farmingdale, NY.
  • Availability for potential follow-up fittings and revisions.

Language Skills: English proficiency required (reading, writing, speaking, comprehension). Knowledge of an additional language(s) is a plus!

Mathematical Skills: Basic arithmetic and algebra

Reasoning Ability: Excellent planning and problem-solving skills with limited resources; ability to effectively prioritize and project manage multiple assignments at any given time.

Work Environment: Indoor office environment most times.
