Job Description

The Technical Business Analyst is responsible for translating approved business and process requirements into detailed system requirements, epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria that enable predictable delivery of technology solutions.  This role works closely with the Systems Design & Intelligence (SDI) team, Architecture, Engineering, QA, and business stakeholders to ensure requirements are technically understood, system impacts are identified, and work is sufficiently defined before entering development. The role combines business understanding with technical analysis across applications, APIs, integrations, and data.

The Technical Business Analyst serves as the requirements bridge between SDI and software delivery, maintaining traceability from approved business requirements through development, testing, business acceptance, and release. The role develops and maintains deep knowledge of assigned business applications and provides requirements leadership with an emphasis on clarity, system-level understanding, traceability, and accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Requirements Translation & Development Readiness:

  • Partner with SDI to understand approved business requirements, workflows, business rules, future-state processes, and desired outcomes.
  • Facilitate detailed requirements and refinement sessions necessary to prepare work for development.
  • Engage SDI and business stakeholders as needed to clarify requirements and resolve questions identified during system analysis or development.
  • Maintain requirements and story readiness throughout the development lifecycle.

Technical & System Impact Analysis:

  • Analyze existing application behavior, business logic, data structures, and system configuration to understand how the system currently works.
  • Analyze data relationships using SQL and navigate front-end applications to investigate functionality and data.
  • Trace data flows from the user interface through application APIs and integrations to the underlying databases.

Documentation & Traceability:

  • Author and maintain detailed system requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, system use cases, data mappings, interface requirements, UX requirements, and other development-supporting documentation.
  • Incorporate and reference SDI-developed business requirements, process maps, workflows, business rules, and future-state designs within system and development artifacts.
  • Maintain traceability from approved business requirements through system requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, testing, and business acceptance.
  • Document system behavior, functional rules, data relationships, and other application knowledge necessary to support ongoing development and maintenance.

System Knowledge & Functional Stewardship:

  • Develop and maintain deep functional and technical knowledge of assigned business applications and their supporting data, integrations, and business rules.
  • Serve as a subject-matter resource for how existing system functionality supports business processes.
  • Identify inconsistencies, duplicated functionality, technical dependencies, and opportunities to simplify or standardize system behavior.

Validation & Business Acceptance:

  • Ensure test scenarios and QA coverage align with documented requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Support SDI and business stakeholders in planning and executing User Acceptance Testing (UAT).  Coordinate UAT activities, track identified defects and requirement gaps, and facilitate resolution with the appropriate teams.
  • Ensure documented business acceptance is obtained from the appropriate business owner prior to release.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, ability to think at the system level and anticipate downstream impacts of change.  Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills across face-to-face, phone, email, and MS Teams, strong written documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to translate business and process requirements into detailed system requirements that can be understood and acted upon by technical teams.
  • Ability to investigate existing system behavior and distinguish business requirements from technical design and implementation decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Analytics, or related technical or analytical field, r an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • A degree in Business Administration or a related business discipline may be considered when accompanied by demonstrated technical experience, training, or education in systems analysis, databases, application development, integrations, or related technologies.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems analysis, technical business analysis, application analysis, software delivery, or a related role involving the analysis of complex business applications.
  • Demonstrated experience translating business and process requirements into detailed system requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and other development-ready artifacts.
  • Demonstrated experience investigating existing application behavior and performing system impact analysis to identify dependencies, business rules, edge cases, and downstream impacts.
  • Hands-on experience working with relational databases and SQL, including the ability to query, analyze, and validate data in support of requirements and system analysis.
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs, system integrations, and common integration concepts, with the ability to understand and investigate how data moves between systems.
  • Ability to understand and trace relationships among user interfaces, application logic, APIs, integrations, and databases.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, Agile methodologies, requirements management, testing, and business acceptance.
  • Experience working directly with software developers, architects, QA resources, and business stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
