About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers, suppliers, and many others to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised $4 billion of capital, making us the largest and leading fusion company in the world.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as Technical Accounting and Internal Controls Lead

Build and operate CFS's management-owned internal controls capability while serving as Accounting's technical lead. This is a senior individual-contributor and hands-on builder role, not another assessment: the role will turn the existing roadmap into documented, operating, and sustainable controls; resolve complex accounting matters; and create the discipline required for efficient audits, scalable growth, and long-term public-company readiness.

What you'll do:

    • Own the controls program. Maintain the risk-based roadmap, governance, annual plan, issue log, remediation cadence, and concise management reporting

    • Define scope and accountability. Map significant accounts, processes, systems, assertions, risks, controls, and owners; refresh scope as the business evolves

    • Build durable documentation. Develop and maintain narratives, flowcharts, risk-and-control matrices, entity-level controls, management review controls, and policies

    • Drive remediation and readiness. Identify design and execution gaps, assign owners and dates, verify closure, and prepare priority processes for operating-effectiveness testing and future SOX requirements

    • Lead technical accounting. Research and document U.S. GAAP conclusions for complex or unusual transactions and translate them into policies, journal-entry treatment, disclosures, processes, and controls

    • Embed controls into operations and systems. Partner across Accounting, FP&A, Legal, IT, People, Supply Chain, and program teams, including during ERP and other finance-system implementations

    • Coordinate assurance. Serve as a primary liaison to external auditors and specialized advisors while retaining internal ownership of decisions, evidence standards, and execution

What we’re looking for:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • Active CPA required
    • 10+ years in accounting, audit, internal controls, or advisory, with meaningful hands-on responsibility for both technical accounting and control design or SOX readiness. Experience building or materially advancing a controls program in a high-growth, pre-IPO, newly public, or complex public-company environment
    • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, COSO, financial statement assertions, and ICFR design and evaluation
    • Ability to write clear, defensible accounting memoranda; apply pragmatic, risk-based judgment; influence without direct authority; communicate clearly; and drive work end to end while balancing rigor with business needs

Bonus points for:

    • Experience in a high-growth, manufacturing, R&D, project-based, or operationally complex environment
    • Experience with Odoo or similar ERP systems

Must-have Requirements:

  • Perform extended activities such as typing, standing, sitting, walking, etc.
  • Occasional nights/weekends/on-call may be required during payroll processing, month-end close, audit, compliance deadlines, system issues, or urgent operational escalations.
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics

#LI-Hybrid

At CFS, we excel in fast-paced environments, driven by our values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we grow, we’re eager to bring on mission-driven folks who offer diverse perspectives and fresh ways to tackle challenges.

We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally, regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law.

This role requires compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information (collectively, “Export Control Laws"). Any offer of employment will be contingent on the need for compliance with such Export Control Laws.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Active CPA license
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting, audit, internal controls, or advisory
  • Hands-on experience with technical accounting and control design or SOX readiness
  • Experience building or materially advancing controls programs in high-growth, pre-IPO, newly public, or complex public-company environments
  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, COSO, financial statement assertions, and ICFR design and evaluation
  • Experience writing accounting memoranda and applying risk-based judgment
  • Experience with Odoo or similar ERP systems
  • Experience in high-growth, manufacturing, R&D, project-based, or operationally complex environments
