We are seeking an experienced WordPress Tech Lead with a strong back-end focus and a proven track record in designing scalable architecture, building custom plugins, and leading enterprise-level WordPress implementations.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in platform architecture and a strong interest in headless WordPress implementations, as well as proficiency with GraphQL and REST APIs.
We need an independent problem-solver who is also a collaborative leader, capable of making informed technical decisions and effectively representing engineering perspectives in cross-functional discussions.
As part of our digital transformation, our Client is migrating multiple brands to WordPress, and this role will be vital in enhancing the platform post-launch.
- 7+ years of experience in WordPress and PHP, backed by a strong portfolio of complex and large-scale projects.
- Proven experience designing scalable, fault-tolerant back-end systems within WordPress, including developing custom plugins and services that support high-traffic applications.
- Deep understanding of RESTful APIs and familiarity with GraphQL APIs.
- Experience implementing headless or decoupled WordPress architectures.
- Skilled in modern JavaScript (ESNext, JSX) and building custom Gutenberg blocks using block.json and React.
- Prior experience supporting high-traffic enterprise websites.
- Strong debugging skills, performance optimization, and proficiency in local development workflows.
- Hands-on experience with testing frameworks in WordPress, such as PHPUnit.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git and GitHub.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, product-driven environments with rapidly changing priorities and evolving requirements.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to clients and team members.
- At least Upper-Intermediate English level
- Be able to align with US Eastern Time (EST)

- Hands-on experience with WordPress VIP hosting infrastructure.
- Skilled in managing and developing WordPress multisite setups.
- Proven experience implementing modern CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
- Exposure to AWS cloud services and contemporary infrastructure tools.
- Active contributions to the WordPress community through open-source projects and industry events.
- Experience working in the digital media and publishing sectors.
- Familiar with front-end frameworks such as React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the technical vision for the Client's WordPress platform, overseeing the development and rollout of new features in partnership with both internal teams and external collaborators.
- Play a crucial role in designing and evolving the platform's architecture and back-end infrastructure to ensure it remains stable, scalable, and adaptable.
- Uphold high coding standards by focusing on performance optimization, security, and best practices for scalability.
- Work closely with designers, front-end developers, and product managers to efficiently plan, prioritize, and execute development initiatives.
- Offer technical advice and mentorship to internal engineers, fostering their growth in WordPress expertise.
- Define and shape the technical strategy through comprehensive design documentation, architectural decisions, and active collaboration with engineering, product, and design teams.
- Lead code reviews, oversee documentation efforts, and advocate for continuous improvement processes.
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality code across the platform by identifying and resolving technical debt, promoting thorough testing, and ensuring reliable performance at scale.
