Tax Technology & Innovation Manager

Turo's Finance Transformation team is a small, high-impact group sitting at the center of how Turo's finance organization evolves. We own the systems, processes, and data infrastructure that power Tax, Accounting, FP&A, and beyond — and we're building the automation and AI capabilities that will define how finance operates at scale.

This role will be mainly dedicated to tax technology operations and system integrations, reporting to the Senior Manager of Finance Transformation. You'll own the technical infrastructure and day-to-day reliability of Turo's indirect tax systems, working with finance, engineering, and product teams to ensure accuracy and scalability as the business grows.

Tax Technology Implementation & Support

• Support end-to-end deployment of tax technology tools, partnering with Engineering, Product, and Finance stakeholders to execute implementations and manage ongoing maintenance
• This role will be mainly dedicated to tax technology operations and system integrations, reporting to the Senior Manager of Finance Transformation. You'll own the technical infrastructure and day-to-day reliability of Turo's indirect tax systems, working with finance, engineering, and product teams to ensure accuracy and scalability as the business grows
• Participate in the evaluation and selection of tax technology solutions across indirect tax, compliance, and reporting functions
• Support Turo's digital tax transformation roadmap, helping ensure tax systems scale with business growth and international expansion
• Lead the migration of OneSource to Turo's AWS platform in partnership with engineering

AI, Automation & Process Improvement

• Identify and help implement opportunities to apply AI and automation to tax and finance processes — including tax research, data classification, audit response preparation, and anomaly detection
• Explore emerging AI-powered tools and bring forward practical recommendations for how Turo can leverage them to improve accuracy, reduce manual effort, and increase speed
• Partner with Finance Transformation colleagues to support automation initiatives across the broader finance organization, extending impact beyond tax into adjacent functions
• Maintain a mindset of continuous improvement — proactively flagging inefficiencies and proposing technology-driven solutions

Systems, Data & Controls

• Maintain accurate and reliable tax data flows between Turo's ERP, tax engines, and internal systems
• Support system internal controls documentation to meet SOX compliance requirements across tax technology tools
• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with tax tools, ERP interfaces, and data pipelines; escalate and coordinate resolutions with Engineering as needed
• Manage data extraction processes for state and local tax audits; reconcile tax reporting to ERP systems as required
• Develop strong working knowledge of Turo's tax data architecture, integrations, and data pipelines

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Serve as a connector between Tax and Engineering/Product — helping translate tax requirements into technical language and vice versa
• Collaborate with Accounting, FP&A, and Finance Transformation colleagues to identify shared technology and automation opportunities
• Develop a solid understanding of Turo's marketplace business model, including the tax implications of peer-to-peer transactions, marketplace facilitator obligations, and international indirect tax complexity.

• 8-10+ years of experience in tax technology, tax operations, or a related field — ideally with exposure to system implementations or ERP/tax system integrations
• Hands-on experience with tax determination platforms (OneSource Determination is ideal, but experience with Avalara, Taxjar, Vertex, or similar tax engines will be considered)
• Working knowledge of indirect tax concepts (sales and use tax, VAT/GST, marketplace facilitator rules) and how they translate into system and data requirements
• Understanding of tax data flows and integrations between ERP systems and tax platforms
• Experience with peer-to-peer marketplaces or platforms where tax compliance is operationally complex
• Familiarity with corporate tax concepts including compliance, reporting, and tax audit data requirements
• Basic understanding of SOX internal controls frameworks as they apply to systems and technology
• Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail
• Ability to work cross-functionally and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, or related field

For this role, the target base salary range in San Francisco is $128,000- $160,000 annually. This role is also eligible for equity and benefits. In general, our ranges reflect the market-based target for new hire salaries based on the level and location of the role. Within the range, individual pay is determined by objective factors assessed during the application and interview process, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Turists will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
