Tarper (Newkirk)
Job Description: This position involves, but is not limited to, covering & securing loaded flatbed trailers with tarps & required straps prior to transport. The tarper's duties include placing a large sheet of plastic over the loaded materials before covering them with tarps in order to protect the load from the weather and dirt. Once the load is covered, the tarps are secured around the load & to the trailer using bungee straps. 4" webbing straps and corner boards are then placed over the load and used to secure the load per company & D.O.T. guidelines. The position requires working indoors, outdoors, and in varying temperatures depending on the current weather conditions. Pushing, pulling, & lifting of tarps and other materials up to 50 lbs+ may be required on occasion. (Getting help from a co-worker to lift heavy objects is required.) Being able & willing to work as part of a team, but also as a self-motivated individual is required.
Job Duties Include: (but not limited to)
- Involves covering loaded 45-53 ft flatbed trailers with tarps and securing the load and tarps with bungee cords, 4-inch straps, and corner boards per customer, company and D.O.T. standards.
- Untarping inbound loads as needed and staging supplies on carrier trailers
- Physical job that may require working indoors and outdoors and in all types of weather.
- Maintaining the tarping area in an orderly condition, general housekeeping, other tasks as assigned by management
Permanent position which may require overtime and weekend work.
Personal protective Equipment (PPE) is required at all times. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe footwear, safety green uniform shirt (or reflective safety vest), and hearing protection (in specific areas). All required PPE & uniforms are provided by the company, except steel toe footwear.
Work Schedules and Compensation: Current workdays are Monday morning - Saturday morning (3 shifts), but schedules subject to change. Weekend work and overtime may be required in certain situations.
- Starting pay is $19.00/hr
- 1st shift: 6:45 am - 3:15 pm
- 2nd Shift: 2:45 pm - 11:15 pm
- 3rd Shift: 10:45 pm - 7:15 am
- Weekly Pay - Every Friday

Skills Required
- Ability to lift, push, and pull tarps and materials up to 50 lbs+ (assist available for heavier lifts)
- Must wear required PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe footwear, safety green shirt or reflective vest, hearing protection where required
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors and indoors in varying weather and temperature conditions
- Ability to work assigned shifts (including nights), Monday–Saturday schedule, with possible overtime and weekend work
- Ability to follow company and D.O.T. guidelines for tarping and load securement
- Capable of performing physical staging, untarping inbound loads, and general housekeeping of tarping area
- Teamwork and self-motivation to perform duties with limited supervision
