Job Description

The System Chief Perfusionist (SCP) reports to the Associate Chief Operating Officer for Perioperative Services. The SCP will work in close collaboration with, and in alignment to, Heart and Vascular ICCE strategies to ensure program goals, quality standards, and growth initiatives are cohesive across the enterprise.

Under general supervision, the SCP is responsible for the management, oversight, and coordination of perfusion services and patient care activities, including personnel management and fiscal operations, for the MUSC Charleston Adult and Pediatric Perfusion teams. The SCP will implement standardized protocols and workflows and oversee quality metrics and patient safety activities at all MUSC Health Regional Health Network (RHN) sites where perfusion services are performed. This includes establishing a Perfusion System QAPI that encompasses all RHN sites.

The SCP will oversee the activities of the two Charleston perfusion managers (Adult and Pediatric). These managers—collaborating with and under the oversight and ultimate decision-making authority of the SCP—will have direct responsibility for management of the perfusion teams. This includes managing staff call and work schedules to ensure 24/7 coverage for both pediatric and adult populations; establishing a regular cadence of staff meetings; ensuring timely communication to all team members; developing unit-based goals including quality metrics; and completing annual staff evaluations and feedback to support staff development.

This role will work collaboratively with the Medical Directors of Adult and Pediatric Perfusion; Heart & Vascular ICCE; Children and Women ICCE; the Perioperative Business Director; and the Associate Chief Perioperative Officer to develop and implement one-, three-, and five-year strategic plans (program growth, quality, labor resources, capital planning, EMR integration, etc.) for MUSC Charleston and Health System–affiliated RHN sites. In doing so, the SCP will ensure that plans remain aligned with Heart and Vascular ICCE strategic priorities and clinical standards.

The SCP is expected to engage with other programs to advance the goal of forming a statewide cardiac surgery collaborative. The SCP will serve as clinical call back-up as needed and will represent the department and hospital on internal and external committees.
