Posting description

Advanced nuclear energy systems depend on sophisticated modeling and simulation tools to evaluate performance, safety, and operational behavior. MOOSE (Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment), developed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), provides powerful capabilities for multiphysics simulation — but developing, executing, and validating complex simulation models still demands significant expertise and manual effort.

MOOSEnger is a simulation-aware AI-agent framework designed to automate multiphysics modeling and simulation workflows within the MOOSE ecosystem. This internship will focus on advancing MOOSEnger's agentic capabilities, including automated model generation, simulation execution, error diagnosis, and verification. The intern will work closely with INL computational scientists to build AI-agent workflows, integrate simulation tools and domain knowledge, and evaluate agent performance on representative multiphysics problems.

Reporting to the Multiphysics Computational Frameworks team. This team works a 9x80s schedule onsite at our Idaho Falls Campus. Start date and duration of internship vary based on project and student availability. You may be eligible for course credit for this internship if approved by your university.

  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)
  • Current Resume or CV
  • Unofficial Transcripts (include current and completed degree programs)
  • Current class schedule and number of credits

The ideal candidate will possess

  • Experience or coursework in programming languages such as Python and C++.  Familiarity with machine learning, large language models (LLMs), or AI-agents is preferred.
  • Interest in scientific computing, numerical simulation, and multiphysics modeling.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a research environment.
