The Role

The Storyboard Artist role is only open to current Texas residents. The Storyboard Artist plays a pivotal role in transforming scripts into dynamic storyboard sequences that convey drama, action, and occasionally comedy. With a focus on high-action sequences and complex choreography, the Storyboard Artist must demonstrate exceptional draftsmanship, a strong sense of shot direction, visual storytelling, and the ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines.

In close collaboration with the Episode Directors, the Storyboard Artist ensures each scene aligns with the series’ style and narrative. They interpret scripts, create compelling storyboard sequences, and provide key elements such as shot selection, camera movements, rough posing, and shot descriptions. This enables the Animatic Animators to refine the drawings and add motion to the performances downstream.

This position reports directly to the Episode Directors.

Responsibilities

  • Create visually compelling storyboards that transform scripts into epic animatic sequences.
  • Collaborate closely with the Episode Directors and team members to maintain consistency with the series’ visual style and storytelling needs.
  • Utilize strong understanding of anatomy, posing, perspective, and composition to create dynamic and visually accurate scenes.
  • Work with the Episode Directors to establish and experiment with camera placement, movement, and framing to enhance storytelling, emotional impact, and dynamic knowledge of film theory, particularly in anime-influenced works, to enhance shot direction and storytelling.
  • Check the production tracker for assigned sequences and maintain up-to-date progress on all assignments.
  • Stay current with the latest scripts and production notes, ensuring timely completion of revisions and updates as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with the Episode Directors and the Production Manager, providing updates on sequence progress and addressing any challenges.
  • Attend production meetings and actively contribute ideas to improve workflows and enhance the quality of the production.
  • Provide notes to each shot describing the action and providing direction to Animatic Animators and the Outsource Partners downstream.
  • Help to tighten character posing and keys in storyboards as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current Texas resident.
  • Strong draftsmanship with the ability to adapt to various artistic styles, particularly in high-action, anime-influenced sequences.
  • In-depth understanding of anatomy, perspective, and composition to accurately represent characters and environments.
  • Knowledge of film theory, especially as it applies to action and visual storytelling.
  • Proven organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Experience with production tracking tools and an understanding of how to manage assets within a structured pipeline.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment, while producing high-quality results.

Desired Qualifications (but not required)

  • Professional experience working in Storyboard Pro.
  • Basic knowledge of 3D software, particularly Cinema 4D.
  • Experience in traditional animation.

Classifications

  • This is a non-exempt full-time employee role
  • This position is covered by a Union contract
