Software Engineer

Salary: $180,000 – $250,000 USD

At Equals, we're building the next-generation spreadsheet: connected directly to and working with massive datasets, version control and collaboration, and refined charting and dashboards.

You'll be joining a team of people with 10+ years experience building software and companies in Silicon Valley. Our founders were both executive level leaders at Intercom.

Work on difficult challenges

An in-browser spreadsheet isn't your typical web app.

• High-Performance Spreadsheet Engine: Our spreadsheet engine running in the browser needs to be able to operate over large amounts of data in realtime. This includes tackling challenges in formula parsing, dependency tracking, formatting, real-time recalculation, and rendering.

• A Better Data Pipeline: Design and build robust, efficient data pipelines and abstractions that allow Equals to seamlessly work with massive datasets. Leverage column-based storage to evaluate spreadsheet formulas on top of warehouses of data, and Views for a simple, powerful way to understand and share your data.

• Powerful Data Visualizations: Build best-in-class data visualization components like charts and dashboards, and innovate on the spreadsheet paradigm itself with powerful summary tables.

Who we're looking for

We're assembling a founding engineering team in our new NYC hub. We seek experienced, high-agency engineers who are driven by difficult technical problems.

• You thrive on complexity: You enjoy breaking down large, ambiguous problems (like optimizing computation over infinite data sets or ensuring correctness in a complex, stateful application) into shippable components.We make plans, understanding systems.

• You obsess over quality and performance: You understand systems deeply and care about the details, from algorithmic efficiency to user-facing polish.

• You are ambitious and autonomous: You can own projects end-to-end, driving them from conception to completion.

• You have significant experience: You possess substantial hands-on experience building, scaling, and optimizing complex web applications. Deep expertise in frontend (e.g., React, TypeScript, performance optimization) and/or backend (e.g. web servers, database design, distributed systems) is crucial.

• You're excited to build in person: You value collaboration and are eager to be a foundational member of our engineering team in our New York City office.
