Walmart Schema Registry (WSR) is where Walmart teams publish, version, and validate Protocol Buffer schema definitions. From those schemas, WSR generates Java, Go, and Rust bindings for consumers. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set technical direction across the registry server, the codegen pipeline, and the GitHub-based schema workflow, and you will drive multi-quarter initiatives that impact many teams. What you'll do...
About the team
Walmart's Global Tech Platforms (GTP) organization powers the tools, platforms, and services used by thousands of engineers across the company.
The Walmart Schema Registry team builds the platform that keeps Walmart's data contracts consistent and safe to use. WSR runs on WCNP (Kubernetes on Azure AKS), stores metadata in Google Cloud Spanner, and integrates with GitHub Enterprise, PingFederate SSO, Artifactory, Concord, and LooperPro. Schemas are shared contracts across Walmart, so the work has wide impact.
Your work will influence how software is delivered across Walmart and ultimately help millions of associates better serve hundreds of millions of customers worldwide.
What You’ll Do
- Own architecture and design for the registry server (Rust, gRPC), including schema validation, compatibility rules, and codegen job orchestration.
- Lead the evolution of multi-language codegen (Java, Go, Rust) and artifact publishing across Artifactory, Concord, and LooperPro.
- Design the schema-as-code workflow on GitHub Enterprise, covering PR checks, approvals, merges, and releases, and drive secure-by-default identity and authorization practices.
- Define SLOs, observability, and on-call practices, and lead reliability and incident response for a production platform.
- Mentor engineers and partner with consumer teams and security reviewers through design reviews and technical standards.
· Establish engineering best practices through code reviews, design reviews, technical standards, and mentoring.
What You’ll bring
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with ownership of production distributed systems.
· Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, microservices, and platform engineering principles.
- Strong proficiency in Rust or Go, with experience building async, concurrent server software.
- Hands-on experience with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and API design.
- Experience operating services on Kubernetes, and working knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and JWT-based security.
- Experience with a globally distributed or relational database (such as Spanner, CockroachDB, or PostgreSQL) and a track record of technical leadership. Exposure to schema compatibility tooling, Maven/Artifactory, or GitHub App and CI integrations is a plus.
