Job Title: Staff Software Engineer
Location: Bangalore
Business & Team: Payments Host-to-Host
About the role
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to design and lead the delivery of backend systems that move payments data reliably and securely between channels and platforms. You'll set technical direction, raise engineering standards, and work across backend services, AWS cloud platform, and payments data integration. You'll also help shape how our team uses agentic AI to build software faster and to a higher standard.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and operate scalable, resilient Java backend services and APIs for payments data integration.
- Lead architecture and design decisions. Write ADRs, and take designs through review forums.
- Build and evolve AWS infrastructure, including CI/CD, observability, and security controls, using infrastructure as code.
- Develop event-driven and workflow-based integrations, with a focus on idempotency, retries, and failure handling.
- Use agentic AI tools (e.g. OpenCode, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) as part of your daily development. This covers design exploration, code generation, refactoring, test creation, code review, and debugging.
- Define how the team works with AI agents. You'll write reusable skills, prompts, and agent instructions, set guardrails for security and quality, and share practices that work.
- Mentor engineers on using AI effectively and critically. This includes reviewing AI-generated code with rigour and knowing when not to use it.
- Partner with product, architecture, and security stakeholders to turn ambiguous problems into clear delivery plans.
- Take part in production support and incident response, and drive improvements to reliability.
What you'll bring
- Extensive experience building production backend systems in Java (Spring or similar).
- Hands-on experience with AWS (e.g. EC2/EKS/ECS, Lambda, S3, SQS/SNS, IAM, CloudFormation/Terraform).
- Strong grounding in distributed systems, API design, messaging/streaming (e.g. Kafka), and data integration patterns.
- Practical experience with AI-assisted and agentic development workflows, and sound judgement about their limits and risks.
- A track record of technical leadership across teams: influencing design, mentoring, and delivering complex outcomes.
- Strong testing, CI/CD, and observability practices. These matter more when AI is writing some of the code.
- Clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to have
- Kotlin experience.
- Experience building agent skills, MCP servers, or AI-driven automation for engineering workflows.
- Payments domain knowledge (e.g. ISO 20022, NPP, etc.).
- Experience with workflow engines (e.g. Temporal), containers and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of security and compliance in regulated environments, including responsible AI use.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree/master’s degree in engineering in Computer Science/Information Technology or any similar stream
