As a Staff Software Engineer in our Engineering and Platforms Centre of Excellence, you’ll provide hands-on technical leadership and build practical solutions that uplift engineering across Everyday Business Banking. Your work will turn repeatable challenges into reusable tools, automation and patterns that help teams deliver software more safely, reliably and efficiently.

You will:

  • Lead hands-on engineering initiatives and mentor engineers, helping strengthen technical capability and engineering practices.

  • Design, build and evolve engineering platforms, developer tools and automated workflows across cloud, delivery pipelines, data and metrics.

  • Establish reusable patterns, standards, guardrails and streamlined paths that make software delivery simpler and safer.

  • Champion responsible AI-powered engineering practices across coding, testing, documentation and delivery.

  • Improve developer experience through self-service capabilities, reusable templates, standardised pipelines and automation.

  • Partner with engineering teams to understand delivery challenges and bridge gaps between local needs and enterprise technology services.

  • Work closely with architecture, security, risk, governance and data teams to deliver secure and resilient solutions.

  • Improve observability, reliability, performance and cost efficiency while identifying and addressing technical debt and risk.

You’ll bring strong software engineering fundamentals, broad technical curiosity and a passion for making engineering better for others. We use a wide range of technologies, so we don’t expect you to know everything. Experience across several of the following areas, or comparable technologies, will help set you up for success.

  • Strong hands-on software engineering experience, including designing practical solutions, writing high-quality code and automating engineering workflows.

  • Deep experience in one or more programming languages, with the versatility to work across different languages and technology stacks.

  • Experience designing, building and operating cloud-based software or engineering platforms, ideally using Amazon Web Services.

  • Knowledge of modern delivery practices, including infrastructure as code, continuous integration and delivery, observability, reliability engineering and secure software development.

  • Experience with containers and runtime platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes or equivalent technologies.

  • Practical experience using AI-powered engineering tools to improve productivity, quality, testing, documentation or automation.

  • The ability to explain complex technical concepts, influence decisions and guide teams through engineering change.

  • A collaborative, adaptable and continuous-improvement mindset, with a genuine interest in mentoring others and simplifying developer experience.
