Toast is building out a New Ventures business unit with the goal of researching, developing, and scaling a new generation of products and business lines that can have a substantial impact on Toast’s long-term growth. As we get ready to make these new products available to all our customers we are looking to hire a Staff Software Engineer to super charge our team and help us scale our products.
About this roll* (Responsibilities)
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Software Engineer proficient in Java/Kotlin with a strong background in building scalable and robust software products. The ideal candidate will have a passion for innovation, a deep understanding of software architecture and design principles, and desire to build & own products from scratch.
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality software solutions using Java/Kotlin, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
- Lead the development of new features and functionalities from concept to deployment, working closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and other engineers.
- Architect and implement scalable and efficient solutions to solve complex business problems, specifically in the Ads Tech space.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical leadership and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, define project scope, and prioritize tasks to meet business objectives.
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical meetings to ensure the quality and reliability of the software.
- This is a fully remote position that must reside in the province of Ontario, BC or Alberta.
Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 6+ years professional/relevant experience as a software engineer, with a focus on Java/Kotlin development.
- Proven track record of building and delivering complex software products from scratch, preferably in a startup or fast-paced environment.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and data structures.
- Proficiency in modern software development tools and practices, including version control systems (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and agile methodologies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a collaborative and dynamic team environment.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Special Sauce* (Nonessential Skills/Nice to Haves)
- Experience in an early stage technology startup
- Experience building products from scratch is a huge plus!
- Experience in Ads Tech (working with Google Ads APIs, Meta APIs and/or TikTok APIs) is highly desirable
- Experience deploying and scaling ML Models (specifically LLMs) is a plus

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.
Pay Range
$127,000—$203,000 CAD
