Boston Dynamics is looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Central Hardware team.

As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on our Central Hardware team,  you will research fundamental technology and deliver solutions for all Boston Dynamics projects.  You will be responsible for implementing systems across multiple disciplines including sensors, materials, actuation, and tools.  You will integrate closely with technology subject matter experts, product engineering teams and production teams.

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support rapid brainstorming and prototyping of new technology across a variety of disciplines.

  • Partner closely with electrical engineers, software engineers and subject matter experts to solve complex real-world system engineering problems.

  • Lead mechanical design efforts for key subsystems, from early concept through production.

  • Apply your knowledge to balance performance, manufacturability, and reliability across a range of mechanical requirements—torque, stiffness, mass, thermal behavior, and tolerance stack-ups.

  • Use simulation and analysis tools to guide decisions and validate your designs.

What You Bring:

  • Have strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including statics, dynamics, materials, and heat transfer.

  • Are fluent in CAD (we use 3DEXPERIENCE) and are confident in managing complex mechanical assemblies.

  • Have experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, and implementing design changes in a production environment.

  • Have a proven ability to manage technical trade-offs and drive timely resolution of high-stakes, real-world problems.

  • Are comfortable working hands-on during development, testing, and debugging phases.

Required Experience:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • A minimum of 4-6 years of related experience or an advanced degree with 2+ years of experience.

  • Proven ability to lead designs through the full development cycle from blank sheet or design improvements through validation and implementation.

Nice to Have Experience:

  • Experience using CATIA 3DX CAD system

  • Experience with electromechanical systems, interconnect, sensors, and actuation

  • Experience with a range of materials and applications including soft goods, composites, castings, and extrusions

  • Experience across a range of materials and applications

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.

The salary range for this position will be clearly stated in the job posting as required by Massachusetts law. The base pay range for this position is between $117,000 - $145,000.
