About Us

At Matterworks we are building AI tools to extract insights from the ever-growing corpora of biological data and to unlock opportunities in therapeutic discovery, development, and manufacturing. We are building large-scale deep learning models of biological data to predict the phenotype and behavior of biological systems.

Position Overview

As a Staff Machine Learning Scientist, you will be a key technical leader responsible for designing and building our core deep learning models. You will tackle some of our most challenging technical projects, translating high-level scientific goals into robust and effective neural network architectures that can interpret complex mass spectrometry data. This role requires a deep, hands-on understanding of deep learning principles and a passion for building high-quality, impactful models.

Key Responsibilities

  • Bespoke Model Architecture and Development: Design and build novel deep learning models, with a focus on creating custom architectures tailored to our specific scientific domains and data modalities.

  • Technical Project Leadership: Lead the technical execution of complex machine learning projects from conception to deployment. This includes defining technical requirements, designing experiments, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality models.

  • Hands-On Implementation: Be deeply involved in the coding and implementation of our models using PyTorch and NumPy. You will be expected to write clean, efficient, and well-tested code.

  • Research and Innovation: Stay current with the latest research in deep learning and its applications in chemistry and biology. Propose and prototype new ideas to enhance our modeling capabilities.

  • Collaboration and Mentorship: Collaborate closely with other scientists and engineers on the team. Mentor junior members and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing and technical growth.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in building and deploying deep learning models.

  • Strong proficiency in Python, PyTorch and NumPy is required.

  • Proven experience in designing and implementing novel neural network architectures. A portfolio of projects or publications demonstrating this is highly valued.

  • Experience with machine learning for spectral analysis, structure prediction, or molecular representation learning is a strong plus.

  • A track record of contributing to impactful projects with a clear demonstration of your technical contributions.

  • Familiarity with scientific data formats (e.g., HDF5, mzML, Zarr).

What We Do

Matterworks is developing advanced AI-powered software and proprietary chemistry reagents to enable real-time, quantitative metabolomics to accelerate the research, development, and manufacturing of biologic therapeutics.

Metabolomics measures all the small molecules a cell needs to function. In spite of its far-reaching potential impact across life science disciplines, adoption of metabolomics remains limited and lags behind other ‘omic techniques due to a number of inherent challenges. Matterworks is developing a novel alternative methodology that activates deep learning (DL) for analytical chemistry, to remove the constraints imposed by the requirement for human-interpretable data.

Matterworks is on a mission to democratize metabolomics and catalyze its widespread adoption and integration into the life sciences. Our view is very simple: solving metabolomics will advance all of the life sciences industries.

Why Work With Us

We are a passionate team of scientists and engineers committed to building better tools to interrogate biology and accelerate the rate of scientific progress. In pursuit of our ambitious goals, we rely on our core company values to guide our work: Mission First, Communication & Trust, Growth Through Challenges, and Scientific Excellence.
