PreVeil is a fast-growing tech company transforming secure communication and compliance for the modern enterprise. Our encrypted email and file sharing platform makes end-to-end encryption easy to use, and has been named PC Magazine’s Best Encrypted Email and File Sharing Solution five years running.
Trusted by more than 3,000 defense contractors, PreVeil has become the gold standard for protecting sensitive information and achieving compliance efficiently. We’re profitable, growing 100% year-over-year, and building for the long term.
PreVeil is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Client Systems to set the technical direction for the software that runs on customer endpoints and securely coordinates with PreVeil’s cloud services.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role with no direct reports. You will lead through technical strategy, architecture, cross-team influence, and mentorship, while staying close to the code on the most critical work.
It is also an inherently cross-team role. You will shape architecture across desktop clients, synchronization, identity, and the client-facing parts of our cloud and security stack, partnering closely with Engineering leadership, Product, Infrastructure, and Security. This is not a traditional web frontend or backend API-only role: the work spans local state, file-system integration, networking, synchronization, identity, reliability, and secure protocols across Windows and macOS.
This position is flexible hybrid for employees based in the Boston area with time in our Boston office at 53 State Street. We also welcome applicants based outside Massachusetts for remote employment.
What You’ll Own
Client Architecture: Define the long-term technical direction, target architecture, and modernization strategy for PreVeil’s Windows and macOS clients and their integration with cloud services.
Synchronization and Reliability: Set the direction for real-time synchronization, local-state management, and multi-device reliability. Act as the escalation point for the hardest production issues involving performance, scalability, connectivity, and reliability.
Secure Protocols and Identity: Design and evolve secure protocols and interfaces across client and cloud components, and shape the architecture for enterprise identity, including SSO, Okta, Active Directory, provisioning, and role-based access control. Set the bar for secure coding and system design across teams.
Encrypted Search: Lead the technical approach to semantic search across end-to-end encrypted email and file content.
Engineering Standards: Establish standards for client performance, diagnostics, testing, release processes, and production reliability. Identify systemic risks in reliability, performance, security, and engineering process, and lead org-wide solutions.
Technical Leadership: Drive high-impact, multi-team initiatives from strategy through delivery and production operation. Partner on multi-quarter technical roadmaps, represent engineering in executive, customer, and partner conversations, develop senior engineers into technical leads, and help recruit senior engineering talent.
Our Technology Environment:
PreVeil currently uses Python and Go across core services, C++ for portions of the Windows client, Swift and native tooling on macOS, web technologies for browser-based clients, and SQL/SQLite for relational and local storage. Direct experience with these technologies is helpful but not required.
What Success Looks Like at 6 Months
■ A target architecture and modernization plan for the Windows and macOS clients is documented and agreed with Engineering leadership.
■ At least one multi-team initiative, such as synchronization reliability or enterprise identity, is underway with clear milestones.
■ A key client reliability or performance metric has measurably improved.
■ Standards for client performance, diagnostics, testing, and releases are defined and adopted across teams.
■ Senior engineers are leading designs and reviews with your mentorship.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Experience
■ 10+ years of professional software engineering experience across multiple companies or product domains; BS in Computer Science or a related field (MS or PhD in Computer Science, security, or systems a strong plus)
■ Deep computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking, and systems design
■ Substantial experience architecting commercial software that runs on a client, endpoint, desktop application, embedded device, or similar distributed environment
■ Experience shipping and operating production software used by external customers, including owning performance, reliability, and failure scenarios at scale
■ Proven experience designing distributed systems involving synchronization, consistency, event delivery, retries, fault tolerance, or multi-device coordination
■ A track record of driving at least one cross-team or org-wide architectural decision with measurable impact
■ Proficiency in at least one production programming language; no specific language is required. Our stack includes Python and Go for core services, C++ for the Windows client, Swift on macOS, web technologies, and SQL/SQLite
■ Based in Massachusetts for flexible hybrid work, or remote within the United States with monthly travel to Boston
Preferred Experience
■ Native or cross-platform applications for Windows, macOS, Linux, embedded devices, or endpoint environments
■ Local storage, file systems, access controls, sockets, network protocols, or operating-system services
■ Applied cryptography, including public-key and symmetric encryption, digital signatures, and key management
■ Secure identity and authentication systems such as PKI, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OIDC, SCIM, Active Directory, or role-based access control
■ File synchronization, offline-first systems, replication, consistency models, conflict resolution, or multi-device state
■ Security, privacy, collaboration, or endpoint products, ideally in regulated environments, and external recognition such as publications, talks, open-source work, or standards bodies
Skills and Mindset
■ A systems thinker. You see how client, cloud, and security decisions connect, and you design for the long term
■ An influencer without authority. You set technical direction across teams through clear reasoning, design reviews, and trust
■ Security-first. You treat secure design and coding as the default, not an afterthought
■ Hands-on. You stay close to the code on the most critical work and lead by example
■ A developer of people. You enjoy growing senior engineers into technical leads
Why This Role Is Exceptional
■ Category authority in a high-urgency market. CMMC compliance is non-negotiable for 100,000 defense contractors, and PreVeil is the leading solution for SMBs
■ Architecture that matters. You will set the direction for the client platform that thousands of defense contractors rely on to protect sensitive data
■ Profitable company, strong growth. We are investing in building a world-class engineering organization

What We Do
PreVeil makes encryption usable for CMMC & ITAR compliance, business and personal use. PreVeil’s encrypted email works with existing apps like Outlook or Gmail, letting users keep their regular email addresses. PreVeil Drive works like DropBox for file sharing, but with far better security. All messages and documents are encrypted end-to-end, which means that no one other than intended recipients can read or scan them—not even PreVeil. PreVeil is designed for both small teams and large enterprises. Visit www.preveil.com to learn more.
