The Role
Provides hands-on technical leadership for a large-scale contact centre modernisation program. Leads a small team of Staff Engineers while designing, developing, and delivering customer engagement platforms using Dynamics 365, AWS, .NET, React, and TypeScript. Responsibilities include architecture, APIs, microservices, DevSecOps, operational excellence, mentoring, engineering standards, and applying Generative AI, RAG, and intelligent automation to customer and colleague experiences.
Summary Generated by Built In
  • We’re modernising CommSec’s customer experience through full-stack engineering and AI.
  • You have deep .NET, React and AWS expertise, combining hands-on engineering with people leadership.
  • Together we will shape engineering strategy and build scalable technology used by millions.

Do work that matters:

Join the Digital & Customer Crew and play a pivotal role in CommSec’s Contact Centre Modernisation Program. As a Staff Engineer Chapter Lead, you’ll combine hands-on full-stack engineering with technical and people leadership, taking ownership of complex solutions from architecture and design through development, deployment and operational excellence. Working across .NET, React, TypeScript, AWS and modern customer engagement technologies, you’ll stay close to the code while setting engineering direction and solving the toughest technical challenges alongside your engineers. You’ll shape scalable APIs, digital experiences, intelligent workflows and AI-enabled capabilities that support millions of customer interactions, while influencing technical strategy and engineering standards across the Crew.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys building great technology and building great engineering teams. You’ll directly lead and develop a small chapter of Staff Engineers, providing coaching, technical direction and the clarity they need to deliver confidently, while partnering closely with squads to turn strategy into working software. You’ll champion full-cycle engineering, modern software practices, automation and Generative AI, creating an environment where engineers own what they build from idea through to production. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Service and Omnichannel form part of the broader platform landscape, but your impact will extend across the end-to-end engineering ecosystem, balancing immediate delivery with longer-term architecture, reliability, security and performance. It’s an opportunity to be a technical leader, engineer and people leader in equal measure, helping shape both the technology and engineering capability behind one of the organisation’s most significant transformation programs.

See yourself in our team:

At CommSec, we're transforming how customers connect, invest and get support through a major modernisation of our customer engagement and contact centre platforms. The Digital & Customer Crew sits at the heart of that journey, with full-stack engineers working across the full engineering lifecycle to design, build, deploy and evolve the technology that powers customer interactions across digital, assisted and AI-enabled channels. From real-time messaging and omnichannel experiences to intelligent routing and customer communications, the team is creating scalable, seamless and personalised experiences that help customers get the right support faster. Working across modern engineering frameworks, AWS, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Service and Omnichannel, we're building platforms that support millions of customer interactions every year.

The Digital & Customer Crew brings together engineers, product specialists, designers and architects with end-to-end ownership of the technology shaping the future of customer engagement at CommSec. We're leveraging cloud-native technologies, automation and Generative AI to solve complex engineering challenges, simplify customer journeys and create smarter, more intuitive experiences. The team's impact reaches well beyond the platform itself, helping customers access support more easily, enabling colleagues to work more effectively and positioning CommSec to meet the evolving expectations of investors for years to come. This is an opportunity to build, own and continuously improve technology that directly shapes how customers experience one of Australia's leading online broking and wealth management businesses.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Bring proven experience leading and developing a small team of senior engineers while remaining deeply hands-on, coding and delivering software across the full engineering lifecycle.
  • Have deep expertise in .NET, C#, React, Next.js and TypeScript, designing and building modern, scalable applications, services and APIs.
  • Demonstrate strong strategic and technical leadership, setting engineering direction, shaping solution architecture and translating business outcomes into pragmatic technology strategies.
  • Take genuine end-to-end ownership, from discovery, technical design and hands-on development through testing, deployment, production support and continuous improvement.
  • Lead complex engineering solutions from concept to production, making sound architecture and design decisions across distributed systems, microservices, APIs and cloud-native environments.
  • Establish and champion engineering standards and technical excellence, including clean code, automated testing, secure-by-design development, CI/CD, observability and reliability.
  • Balance hands-on coding with people leadership, providing technical guidance, code reviews, mentoring and coaching that builds engineering capability and creates high-performing teams.
  • Work effectively across product, engineering and business stakeholders, influencing strategic decisions, navigating technical trade-offs and driving solutions through to measurable outcomes.
  • Bring curiosity for emerging engineering capabilities, including Generative AI, RAG and agentic approaches, and can identify where they create meaningful value within modern software products.
