Job Description

ABOUT US

Managed Sportsbook Services provides end-to-end sportsbook operations, covering risk management and odds provisioning across supported sports and markets. The service ensures continuous operational support for sportsbook activities, enabling stable and consistent delivery of betting services.

THE CHALLENGE
You will take on a staff, hands-on role within the database team, directly supporting the 24/7 operation of MSS and customer databases. You will be actively involved in the design, administration, and support of database systems across development, test, and production environments.
You’ll be expected to take ownership of complex technical work-resolving incidents, delivering technical implementations, and working closely with engineers, project teams, and stakeholders to ensure robust, secure, and high-performing database services under high transaction volumes.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-On Technical Contribution

  • Take ownership of complex database activities including performance tuning, troubleshooting, migrations, and architecture design.
  • Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex incidents, including performance degradation, locking and blocking issues, and data integrity problems.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to support critical production systems.
  • Promote and apply best practices in database administration, tuning, query optimisation, documentation, and automation.

Technical Database Management

  • Perform hands-on installation, configuration, tuning, patching, and upgrading of Oracle 12c/18c/19c on Linux and Windows platforms.
  • Ensure optimal performance and availability through proactive monitoring and tuning.
  • Design, implement, and maintain backup and recovery strategies using RMAN and Data Guard.
  • Create and maintain operational documentation and configuration standards.

Performance Optimisation & Query Tuning

  • Analyse and optimise SQL queries using execution plans, AWR/ASH reports, SQL Trace, and Oracle Diagnostics Pack.
  • Identify and remediate inefficient SQL, poor indexing strategies, and suboptimal optimizer statistics.
  • Investigate and resolve locking, blocking, and deadlock scenarios, including root cause analysis and long-term preventative measures.
  • Work with application and engineering teams to improve query design, schema structures, and transaction handling.
  • Tune memory structures (SGA/PGA), I/O, and resource usage to support high transaction volumes and low-latency workloads.

Cloud Technologies (AWS / OCI)

  • Design and implement cloud-based database solutions using AWS RDS and OCI DBaaS.
  • Perform hands-on migrations from on-premises to cloud environments using tools such as Oracle GoldenGate.
  • Monitor and optimise cloud resource utilisation for performance, cost efficiency, and scalability.

Security & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain database security controls including auditing, encryption, and access management.
  • Carry out patching and vulnerability remediation in collaboration with infrastructure and security teams.
  • Ensure systems meet compliance and regulatory requirements.

Monitoring & Incident Management

  • Define and track technical KPIs related to database uptime, performance, reliability, and query efficiency.
  • Use tools such as Oracle Diagnostics Pack, OEM, Zabbix, and Grafana to monitor system health and identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Perform detailed root cause analysis for performance incidents, including SQL regressions, deadlocks, and resource contention.
  • Implement permanent fixes and automation to prevent recurrence of operational issues.

Success will be evaluated by

  • Technical quality and impact of your hands-on contributions.
  • Reliability, performance, and availability of database systems.
  • Effectiveness in automating database administrative duties, incident handling, change execution, and project delivery.
  • Accuracy and completeness of technical documentation and reporting.
  • Proactive improvements in system performance and operational stability.
  • Stakeholder satisfaction and service continuity.

ABOUT YOU

  • You’re a senior-level Oracle DBA with strong hands-on experience in Oracle 12c/18c/19c, container/pluggable and autonomous databases, and a track record of delivering in high-availability environments.
  • You have experience working collaboratively within DBA or infrastructure teams and supporting less experienced colleagues when needed.
  • You thrive in deeply technical roles where you’re actively solving problems and delivering solutions.
  • You’re comfortable working across on-prem and cloud platforms, including AWS and Oracle Cloud.
  • You have deep knowledge of backup, recovery, security, and performance tuning best practices.
  • You're calm under pressure, detail-oriented, and focused on continuous technical improvement.
