AAJ is seeking a Staff Accountant for its Finance department. The Staff Accountant performs day-to-day full-cycle accounting duties for American Association for Justice and its affiliates. In this role, the Staff Accountant must be able to apply knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and to provide accurate financial data for management review.

Responsibilities: 

  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, bank reconciliations, and other account reconciliations.
  • Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management activities.
  • Monitor restricted funds and ensure proper allocation and documentation of expenses.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the general ledger through appropriate coding by program, funding source, and department.
  • Maintain organized financial records and audit-ready supporting documentation.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation and external reporting requirements.
  • Support ongoing improvements to accounting processes, internal controls, and financial procedures.
  • Prepare financial analyses and reports.
  • Perform other accounting duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, and at least three years of full-cycle accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience
  • Prior accounting experience with associations or not-for-profits preferred. 
  • Strong understanding of month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting in conformity with GAAP, and internal controls.
  • Experience using accounting software, CRM systems, intermediate Excel skills, and Microsoft Suite experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative and evolving environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $68,600 - $81,900. Salary will be determined by the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications.

Skills Required
