About the Role


As the Sr. Director of Data Science for the Core Experience team, you will lead and expand a team dedicated to revolutionizing both the consumer and retailer experience in online grocery shopping. This team is essential in harnessing technology to provide seamless, enjoyable shopping experiences from browsing to doorstep delivery. As a leader in this group, you will collaborate closely with Product and Engineering leadership, playing a pivotal role in steering the strategic direction of Instacart's consumer-facing technologies.

Your leadership and analytical expertise will play a crucial role in not just meeting but exceeding our customer's expectations for convenient, efficient, and enjoyable shopping experiences.


About the Team


On the Core Experience team, we aim to serve the needs of our retailers while providing a consistent experience for our users. Here, we work on the most consumer-facing problems, running a huge number of user experiments to deeply understand the impacts of every decision, rollout and update to our core offerings. We’re tasked with driving Instacart’s future core shopping vision and experience across Instacart App and the white-label softwares we provide to retailers (i.e. Costco). 


About the Job 

  • Build and grow a high-performing team of data scientists.
  • Oversee the design of rigorous experiments and interpret results to draw detailed and actionable conclusions.
  • Lead the development of statistical models to extract trends, measure results, and predict future performance of our technologies & products.
  • Enable objective decision making across the company by democratizing data through dashboards and other analytical tools.
  • Use expertise in causal inference, machine learning, complex systems modeling, behavioral decision theory etc. to shape the future of Instacart Core products.
  • Present findings in a compelling way to influence Instacart’s leadership and product decision making.


About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • 12+ years experience working in a quantitative role at a product company or a research organization.
  • 7+ years of experience managing a team of data scientists, economists or product analysts.
  • Ability to translate business needs into analytical frameworks & superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate in cross-functional capacity with leaders in engineering, product, finance, etc.
  • Eagerness to learn, flexibility to pivot when needed, savviness to navigate and thrive in a dynamic environment, and a growth mindset needed to build a successful team and company.
  • Experience in building and maturing Data Science teams and infrastructure in a startup environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Analytics, Economics, or a related field.
  • Experience working in the gig-economy, supply chain, ecommerce, or retail industries.
