We go beyond standard telematics by offering a comprehensive, managed ecosystem—managing over 200,000 mobile assets for Fortune 500 clients across North America. Our V-Track platform integrates GPS tracking, AI-powered video telematics, and real-time data to drive safety and efficiency. We are in a pivotal phase of growth and looking to expand technology team.

Why Join Velocitor Solutions

The Sr. Database Administrator keeps the databases behind Velocitor’s fleet management and telematics applications fast, available, and recoverable. Reduces production incidents and improves application performance through deep Microsoft SQL Server expertise, disciplined high availability practice, and hands-on performance engineering.

Role Summary

Velocitor’s databases absorb continuous, high-volume device telemetry, serve multi-tenant transactional workloads, and are held to uptime expectations set by customers whose drivers and vehicles are moving right now. The Sr. Database Administrator owns the health, performance, and durability of a multi-terabyte hybrid estate spanning on-premises SQL Server and Azure SQL (Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, and SQL on VMs).

This role requires an understanding of Microsoft SQL Server at the engine level, not the console level. The successful candidate can read a wait statistics profile and explain what the server is actually complaining about, examine an execution plan and explain why the optimizer chose badly, and distinguish an index problem from a statistics problem from a schema problem before changing anything.

This is a hands-on position. The Sr. DBA works in the query window daily: writing T-SQL and PowerShell, reading execution plans, running failover drills, executing migration cutovers, and joining the incident bridge as the person driving diagnosis. Mentorship is part of the job; oversight is not.

Key Responsibilities

Availability and Recovery

  • Own the configuration and operation of Always On Availability Groups, including quorum and WSFC setup, replica topology, and readable secondary routing.
  • Maintain backup, retention, and recovery procedures across on-premises and Azure.
  • Execute version upgrades, cumulative updates, and end-of-support remediation across the estate.

Performance Engineering

  • Own database performance across the estate, from diagnosis of production bottlenecks through resolution.
  • Ensure the platform sustains high-volume telemetry ingest and continued data growth without degrading application response times.
  • Advanced SQL Server performance tuning: execution plan analysis, wait statistics, index strategy, query optimization, and partitioning for large tables.

Azure Estate, Security, and Compliance

  • Execute on-premises to Azure migration work: assessment, sizing, service tier selection, compatibility remediation, and cutover with rollback.
  • Operate Azure SQL Managed Instance in production, including its constraints around maintenance windows, service tier limits, and features that do not carry over from on-premises SQL Server. Right-size resources and flag cost reduction opportunities.

Automation and Collaboration

  • Reduce manual, repeatable database administration work and keep operational knowledge documented so recovery and routine tasks never depend on one person.
  • Partner with application engineering on data design decisions before they reach production.
  • Database automation and deployment: PowerShell (dbatools or equivalent), T-SQL scripting, and version-controlled schema migrations through CI/CD pipelines.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Eight or more years administering Microsoft SQL Server in production on business-critical, customer-facing systems, across versions 2016 and later.
  • Demonstrated depth in SQL Server internals: able to explain how the optimizer, buffer pool, tempdb, transaction log, and locking model behave, and has used that understanding to resolve real incidents.
  • Hands-on production ownership of Always On Availability Groups, including at least one real failover executed or recovered from.
  • Proven track record tuning multi-terabyte databases and sustained high-write-volume workloads.
  • Advanced T-SQL, plus scripting and automation with PowerShell.
  • Extensive experience with Azure SQL Server, including deployment, management, and scaling.
  • Currently hands-on in production.
Preferred Skills
  • Working knowledge of database security and compliance requirements in an audited environment (SOC 2, GDPR, or comparable).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, Azure Database Administrator Associate).
  • Led a large database migration or consolidation effort, including cloud transition, with measurable performance or cost outcomes.
  • Leadership experience and a proven track record of mentoring and developing team members.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Retirement savings plan options.
  • Opportunities for career advancement and professional growth.
