Job Description:

Mars, Incorporated employs over 150,000 Associates across the globe and its segments, Mars Petcare, Mars Snacking, and Mars Food and Nutrition.  Mars Global Services (MGS) is the shared service organization within Mars, Incorporated supporting each of the segments.  Mars Legal plays a key role in supporting the business and MGS.

The Senior Counsel – Renewable Energy is responsible for effectively managing the legal aspects (strategy, portfolio contracting, outside counsel management, etc.) of transactions managed by MGS related to renewable energy projects, other sustainability related projects. Covered transactions include renewable energy contracts, including power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements, equipment purchase agreements, short term environmental attribute contracts, land use/lease agreements. This is a strategic role and business partner for the MGS Commercial service line, and across Mars, Incorporated. 

What are we looking for?

  • J.D. from an accredited US law school, with 10+ years of complex renewable energy contracting experience, ideally with experience in both a well-respected law firm and in the legal department of a multinational company.
  • Broad-based legal experience supporting internal procurement departments on transactional matters.
  • Experience providing counsel to senior business leaders is a plus.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Can act decisively.
  • Capable of analyzing complex legal and policy issues from a commercial perspective.
  • Good relationship and influencing skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly motivated with a bias for action (strong work ethic) and able to function independently.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Partnering closely with the Commercial Renewable Energy Sourcing team, draft, review, and negotiate a variety of renewable energy contracts, including power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements, and equipment procurement contracts.
  • Provide legal advice on matters related to renewable energy projects, including regulatory compliance, project development, and financing.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure contracts align with company objectives and legal requirements.
  • Stay updated on laws and regulations pertaining to renewable energy and advise the company on any potential impacts.
  • Assist in dispute resolution and litigation related to renewable energy contracts.
  • Understand and apply Mars data privacy and information security policies and guidelines consistent with regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Revise and update existing contract templates for procurement related transactions, and help develop market specific contract templates for use in sourcing exercises.
  • Where relevant, supervise the work of external legal counsel to ensure that transactions and litigation matters are supported with quality and efficiency in a cost-effective manner.
  • Assist in management of relevant legal budgets in consultation with the MGS Associate General Counsel.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, if eligible, including variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits.  Eligibility for these additional elements depend on the position offered and the employee’s work schedule (i.e., part-time schedule, store associate).  Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.
