About the Team

Come join the public cloud FinOps team here at Workday! We are a highly visible team at Workday that drives public cloud cost & usage governance across the entire company. We have been empowered to define, plan and implement crawl, walk, run maturation across all aspects of public cloud FinOps including learning & enablement, tooling and driving optimization opportunities. Our actions directly impact Workday's gross margin. This is a new and growing field with potential for career advancement.

About the Role

This role will support one or more direct or indirect contracts with the U.S. Federal Government which, due to federal government security requirements, mandates that all Workday personnel working on the contracts be United States citizens (naturalized or native).

Workday is seeking a Public Cloud FinOps Analyst who has hands-on experience to handle public cloud costs and improve efficiency within our platforms. This role will partner with software engineering teams, liaison with platform engineering teams, cloud governance, product management, and design operations to complete our cost optimization roadmap.

The primary duties will include:

  • Monitor cloud usage and spend metrics to ensure compliance with budgetary constraints. 

  • Work closely with various teams to track and forecast cloud spending. Produce metrics and dashboards to illustrate utilization and cost.

  • Build financial models for projecting cloud costs, ensuring accurate cost estimation, budgeting, forecasting and identification of savings opportunities.

  • Analyze cloud utilization, provide actionable insights and recommendations to team members, and implement strategies to control and reduce costs optimally.

  • Respond to inquiries from cloud teams on FinOps tooling and requests for help with understanding the cloud metadata.

  • Perform analysis to support initiative and decisions with ad hoc financial modeling and analysis as needed

  • Serve as a strategic partner with team members on cost initiatives and to align cloud strategy with broader financial goals.

  • Cross-team collaboration to establish a demand plan for public cloud resources needed for each WDn (Workday Region).

The scope of this team will include Cloud Spend controllership/accountability, Cloud Vendor management, various commercial structuring to get the best price point per usage. This function will have access to near-real-time data to prepare Demand Plan and make intelligent decisions that ultimately result in efficient cloud usage, performance and quality/availability of services. The right candidate is a self-starter who can wear multiple hats and is willing to go above and beyond. You will drive the team over the goal line by thinking strategically and acting conclusively. You align people to goals and make sure they are in the best position possible to succeed. Your daily impact at workday includes:

  • Long range planning of demand for Public (AWS, GCP) services

  • Analysis of actuals to budget / forecast variances.

  • Analyze key areas of waste elimination and rightsizing resources

  • Extract and analyze large scale data within cloud billing and usage, to support senior engineering and financial partners in decision making

  • Leverage sophisticated analytics to derive actionable insights on cloud spend, enabling informed decision-making and planning that aligns with business cost-efficiency goals.

  • Foster cross-team collaboration, crafting a cohesive work environment that encourages unified strategies, improves communication, and aligns with broader business goals.

  • Build alignment with engineering teams to identify and take action on optimization opportunities

  • Review storage and data transfers practices, emphasizing efficiency, and availability, all of which are crucial for flawless business operations.

About You

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in cloud cost management, platform engineering, or related fields.

  • 5+ years experience with analytical tools like Looker, Tableau and Jupyter Notebooks for data manipulation and visualization.

  • 3+ years experience with public cloud infrastructure technologies.

  • 2+ years experience using tools and practices to supervise and analyze cloud costs, finding opportunities for optimization and efficiency.

  • 2+ years of experience in defining public cloud KPI’s and working with engineering teams to automate reporting of critical metrics

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to partner cross-organizationally, develop optimization strategy and drive optimization discussions.

  • Staying up-to-date on current cloud cost trends, technologies, and mitigation strategies, with a focus on hands-on implementation

  • Proven track record to craft and implement innovative solutions that improve financial control and efficiency within the cloud, with experience in agile planning

  • Experience handling major cost-saving projects from inception through post-implementation, as well as getting involved in technical tasks

  • Experience working in an Agile environment

The annualized base salary ranges for the primary location and any additional locations are listed below.  Workday pay ranges vary based on work location. As a part of the total compensation package, this role may be eligible for the Workday Bonus Plan or a role-specific commission/bonus, as well as annual refresh stock grants. Each candidate’s compensation offer will be based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, geography, experience, skills, job duties, and business need, among other things.
