At Personalis, we are transforming the active management of cancer through breakthrough personalized testing. We aim to drive a new paradigm for cancer management, guiding care from biopsy through the life of the patient. Our highly sensitive assays combine tumor-and-normal profiling with proprietary algorithms to deliver advanced insights even as cancer evolves over time. Our products are designed to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) and recurrence at the earliest timepoints, enable selection of targeted therapies based on ultra-comprehensive genomic profiling, and enhance biomarker strategy for drug development. Personalis is based in Fremont, California.

Summary:

You will join a team of bioinformaticians and software engineers whose mission is to develop robust, high-performance pipelines that can accurately and reliably analyze large volumes of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Our pipelines provide the foundation for a wide range of cutting-edge applications in the immune-oncology space, including analysis of diagnostic and emerging biomarkers that enable precision treatment for cancer patients.

We are seeking a highly skilled bioinformatics engineer to bring new analysis capabilities forward from concept, though feasibility, and into production.

Responsibilities:

  • Algorithm development to support new capabilities in our bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Evaluation and integration of in-house and third-party tools.
  • Continued improvement and maintenance of existing pipelines.
  • Big-data analysis across hundreds or thousands of samples to evaluate accuracy and performance of our pipelines.
  • Work with key stakeholders at Personalis to articulate requirements and priorities.

Education

  • Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or a related field. Ph.D. preferred.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a bioinformatics pipeline or algorithm development role.
  • Advanced statistical and algorithmic understanding of somatic NGS-based variant calling.
  • Experience developing bioinformatics pipelines, including expertise with standard Next-generation sequencing analysis tools such as BWA, GATK, samtools, etc.
  • Experience developing novel algorithms for NGS analysis.
  • Experience using high-performance compute clusters using SGE, Torque, Slurm or equivalent.
  • Experience with scientific workflow systems such as Nextflow, Snakemake, Cromwell,
  • Fluency in multiple programming/scripting languages such as Python, Bash, R.
  • Familiarity with different assays and modes of sequencing (WGS vs. Exome, RNA-seq).
  • Domain knowledge in molecular biology and genomics, particularly in areas of cancer research.
