This role represents the highest engineering progression level at the site and functions as a career level technical position. The Specialist Process Engineer applies advanced engineering expertise to independently plan, execute, and coordinate complex assignments, while providing technical leadership within the team. The role is recognized across the Business Unit for deep, specialized knowledge in one or more engineering disciplines and for delivering authoritative guidance on complex technical matters.

Key Accountabilities

  • Serves as the first level of full technical specialization within the site.
  • Provides advanced technical review and guidance for refinery process engineering activities.
  • Applies broad multidisciplinary engineering knowledge and offers supervisory or mentoring support as needed.
  • Adheres consistently to management system processes (Stage Gated Project Process, Management of Change, Operational Risk Management, etc.).
  • Leads and executes complex projects requiring independent judgment and effective task coordination.
  • Develops innovative solutions by adapting existing methods to address complex or unique technical challenges.
  • Contributes to major projects and independently manages smaller-scale initiatives.
  • Acts as a subject‑matter expert, presenting technical findings, recommendations, and interpretations.
  • Reviews technical work for accuracy, provides issue guidance, and supports the training and development of less‑experienced staff.
  • Produces high‑quality technical reports and studies demonstrating strong analytical capability and originality.

Minimum Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering (or equivalent) with 12+ years of experience, preferably in advanced process engineering for oil refining or upgrading.
  • Experience across multiple refining processes or significant depth in a technical discipline.
  • Must understand the complexities of implementing change across the entire refinery.
  • Expected to influence long‑range business planning and assess the impact of emerging technologies. 

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Edmonton refinery in Sherwood Park, located at 801 Petroleum Way
  • Hours of work are typically a 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with some additional hours required occasionally to meet critical deadlines or schedules
  • Our engineering roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
  • Must be or eligible to register as a professional engineer in Alberta
