About Seqera

Seqera is on a mission to empower scientists and organizations to solve humanity’s biggest challenges through data-driven science. As the company behind Nextflow and the Seqera Platform, we enable global enterprises, biotech innovators, academic institutions, and public sector organizations to scale complex data workflows with confidence.

We’re a global, remote-friendly team with headquarters in Barcelona and colleagues across the US, UK, and beyond. As we continue to grow, we’re strengthening our internal foundations - and that’s where you come in.

About the role

We’re looking for a Fullstack Software Engineer to join the Platform team. You’ll work across the stack on the Seqera Platform, the product scientists use to run Nextflow pipelines on cloud and HPC. The work covers API design, data modelling, cloud provider integrations and front end, mostly in Java, Groovy, Angular and Micronaut.

The team is small (about 4 to 5 engineers plus a lead) and the scope is broad. You’ll own an area end to end, help shape architecture decisions, and work with Product and Infrastructure. Experienced engineers on the team are there for consultation.

What You'll Do
  • Design and implement REST APIs and downstream services using Groovy, Java and the Micronaut framework ensuring their scalability, security, and performance.

  • Implement UI components and services in Angular interacting with the Seqera Platform API.

  • Write high-quality, clean, maintainable code using engineering best practices – unit testing, source control, continuous integration, automation, design patterns, etc.

  • Analyze requirements, design and develop features based on the product requirements

  • Build E2E tests to verify the integration between backend implementation and clients

  • Optimize application for maximum performance and scalability.

  • Take design decisions within your scope and document the system so it is not dependent on any one person.

  • Design data models and APIs that stay consistent across services and releases.

  • Build reusable code and components for future use.

  • Collaborate with the Engineering, Product, Infrastructure and Design teams to improve the product.

About you
  • 4+ years building and operating production backend services, with real ownership of at least one.

  • Strong in Java and/or Groovy, with Micronaut, Spring Boot or similar.

  • You care about correctness. Ideally you have worked on billing, metering or other systems where incorrect data has consequences - and if not, you bring the same rigour to data integrity anyway.

  • Comfortable designing REST APIs and data models, and keeping integrations working across versions and failures.

  • Proficiency in Typescript and Angular or React

  • Familiarity with CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) practices and tools like Jenkins or Github Actions

  • Have been accountable for something customer-facing in production.

  • Comfortable inheriting a system, asking questions, and writing down what was never documented.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity - you develop hypotheses with limited information, drive work independently, and reach out early to stay unblocked.

  • We use AI every day and expect engineers to use it extensively. You do not need to be an expert, but you must be genuinely open to it.

Nice to have:
  • Previous experience in writing event based systems is a plus.

  • Experience with the Gradle build system

  • Experience with Docker and related toolset.

  • Experience with Kubernetes deployment model and operations.

  • Experience with E2E testing framework such as Cypress or Playwright

  • Understanding of how to deploy systems for cloud applications.

  • Knowledge of one or more cloud vendor services and APIs.

  • Experience with scientific data analysis workflows and execution engines.

  • Experience designing and implementing microservices and highly parallel applications.

  • Experience in bioinformatics and genomics.

  • A maintainer or a proven track of contributions to open-source software projects.

What will you find working at Seqera?
  • Flexible working hours.

  • International working environment with more than 25 nationalities.

  • Passionate & talented team.

  • Continuous skills development.

  • Team retreats and bonding activities.

  • A culture where your opinion is valued and your decisions have a real impact on the industry.

  • Excitement of a fast-growing startup in a constantly changing environment.

Great benefits
  • Time off: 23 days for vacations per year, 3 days given by Seqera in December, and the national/public holidays according to your location.

  • Equity

  • Private health insurance

  • Private life insurance

  • Home office allowance (valued over 1,000 USD)

  • Learning and development budget per year (1,000 USD)

Skills Required

  • 4+ years building and operating production backend services, including ownership of at least one service
  • Strong Java and/or Groovy experience with Micronaut, Spring Boot, or a similar framework
  • Experience designing REST APIs and data models
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and Angular or React
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions
  • Experience being accountable for customer-facing production functionality
  • Ability to work independently with ambiguity and incomplete information
  • Openness to using AI extensively in engineering work
  • Experience writing event-based systems
  • Experience with Gradle
  • Experience with Docker and related tooling
  • Experience with Kubernetes deployment and operations
  • Experience with Cypress, Playwright, or another end-to-end testing framework
  • Understanding of deploying cloud applications
  • Knowledge of cloud vendor services and APIs
  • Experience with scientific data analysis workflows and execution engines
  • Experience designing microservices and highly parallel applications
  • Experience in bioinformatics and genomics
  • Open-source software maintenance or proven contributions
