Job Description
About the Engineering Team
Chegg's engineering team is a group of passionate engineers who, in close collaboration with product managers, designers, and other developers, build the future of the online education industry. We build our products to scale and to last, we don’t take shortcuts (hello unit-tests and documentation), and we take pride in delivering high quality solutions on time.
The Role
We are looking for a Backend Developer to help build and evolve Chegg’s advertising and monetization platform. You will translate business requirements into reliable services, APIs, and integrations that power programmatic advertising, header bidding, and ad delivery at scale—while ensuring high performance, stability, and privacy compliance.
Responsibilities
Build and maintain backend services and APIs to support programmatic advertising workflows (RTB, Ad Exchange, DSP/SSP integrations)
Own and enhance integrations with Google Ad Manager (GAM) and Prebid.js (header bidding), including configuration, troubleshooting, and performance optimization
Integrate, debug, and monitor ad tags across web surfaces (display/video), including VAST, creatives, and third-party tracking
Develop Node.js-based ad services for configuration management, feature flags/experimentation, and server-side bidding/decisioning
Improve ad latency, yield, and reliability through efficient system design, caching strategies, and observability (logging/metrics/alerts)
Ensure privacy, consent, and compliance across ad flows using consent management platforms (e.g., OneTrust) and standards aligned with GDPR/CCPA
Collaborate with product, analytics, and engineering teams to ship scalable ad features and improve monetization outcomes
Maintain high engineering standards with thorough code reviews, test coverage, documentation, and technical debt management
Skills and Qualifications
3+ years of backend engineering experience, preferably in AdTech, consumer internet, or high-scale web products
Strong understanding of programmatic advertising fundamentals: DSP, SSP, Ad Exchange, RTB, auctions, and yield optimization
Hands-on experience with Google Ad Manager (GAM) and Prebid.js (header bidding)
Familiarity with major DSPs such as The Trade Desk and common ad ecosystem tooling
Experience integrating and debugging ad tags and video/display ads; strong knowledge of VAST and ad delivery flows
Strong backend development experience with Node.js (TypeScript preferred) for scalable services and integrations
Understanding of privacy and consent management (GDPR/CCPA) and tools such as OneTrust
Solid grasp of data structures/algorithms and fundamentals of scalable system design
Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases and event-driven architectures is a plus
Proficiency with Git-based workflows and CI/CD; ability to write unit and integration tests and maintain production-quality code
Why do we exist?
Students are working harder than ever before to stabilize their future. Our recent research study called State of the Student shows that nearly 3 out of 4 students are working to support themselves through college and 1 in 3 students feel pressure to spend more than they can afford. We founded our business on provided affordable textbook rental options to address these issues. Since then, we’ve expanded our offerings to supplement many facets of higher educational learning through Chegg Study, Chegg Math, Chegg Writing, Chegg Internships, Chegg Skills, and more to support students beyond their college experience. These offerings lower financial concerns for students by modernizing their learning experience. We exist so students everywhere have a smarter, faster, more affordable way to student.
