Media Engineering is an innovative, collaborative organization that builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers. Media Engineering handles audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.
The Media Processing team is seeking a Software Engineer II to contribute to the development and maintenance of backend systems that ensure scalable, reliable, and high-performing media workflows. This role involves collaborating with the engineering team to design and implement robust services and infrastructure using modern programming languages and cloud technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain scalable backend services using modern programming languages.
- Build and maintain APIs and backend services to support media workflows.
- Work with event-based systems
- Utilize AWS to maintain infrastructure and ensure service reliability.
- Write unit tests and contribute to code reviews to maintain high-quality code standards.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from design to deployment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges under the guidance of senior engineers.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in one or more backend programming languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go, Scala).
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Familiarity with building and maintaining APIs and backend services.
Bonus Skills:
- Exposure to Scala frameworks (e.g., ZIO, Akka).
- Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., DynamoDB, Redis, ScyllaDB).
- Knowledge of observability tools (e.g., Datadog, New Relic, Honeycomb).
- Basic understanding of containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Enthusiasm for solving problems and learning new technologies in a dynamic environment.
The hiring range for this position in New York City, NY is $120,300.00 to $161,300.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
