About us:
Blue Rose Research builds data and AI tools that help Democrats win elections. Our team combines engineering, data science, and political strategy to power decisions for the country’s top campaigns and progressive organizations. We forecast elections, test ads, and use generative AI to help campaigns understand what’s happening in the news; then respond fast with messages that actually work. We have guided how hundreds of millions of dollars are spent in modern campaigns. We’re a small, mission-driven team that builds fast, experiments boldly, and helps progressives communicate and win—guided by curiosity, purpose, and a genuine desire to use technology for good.
Software Engineer (LLM Products)
We’re seeking a mission-driven software engineer to help build the next generation of political research tools powered by generative AI. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you’ll design, prototype, and scale products that help progressive campaigns make smarter, faster decisions—ranging from chatbots and content-generation tools to systems that summarize news and social media trends in real time.
If you’re entrepreneurial, product-minded, and motivated by impact—someone who ships quickly, thinks strategically, and wants to use their skills for social and political change—this opportunity is for you.
Other Responsibilities Include:
- AI & Content Automation: Develop agentic workflows, prompts, and evaluation tooling for LLM-based systems; automate video generation and editing (e.g., FFMPEG).
- Core Engineering: Break down complex problems, design clear domain models, maintain separation of concerns, and write clean, reliable, well-tested code.
- Backend Development: Build and maintain backend business logic, REST APIs, and data storage systems; ensure robustness, monitoring, and observability.
- Technical Reasoning: Apply systems thinking to evaluate trade-offs, optimize for scale and performance, and focus on what drives the most impact.
- Data Engineering: Design schemas, build ETL pipelines and workflow systems, manage SQL-based data infrastructure, and ensure data reliability.
- Web Development: Build lightweight web tools and internal interfaces using HTML, CSS, JS, and Flask (we don’t build complex web apps).
- Political Data: Work with voter files, survey data, and political models to deepen insights into campaign strategy.
About you:
- Proficient in Python (our primary language) and comfortable writing and querying SQL (Postgres, BigQuery).
- Collaborative and kind: you value teamwork and contribute to a positive, respectful environment.
- Flexible and curious: you enjoy working across disciplines and the full tech stack.
- Motivated by impact: you care about progressive causes and want your work to advance them.
- Clear communicator: you can explain complex ideas simply, in writing and conversation.
- Experience with political data, voter files, or survey analytics is a plus, but curiosity and initiative matter most.
What we offer:
- The salary range for this position is $165,000 - $210,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
- We offer a competitive salary, medical, dental, and health benefits, and a work environment that will support your differences.
- Fully remote environment with an office in NYC and a number of folks who work in-person regularly – both in NYC and at shared workspace meetups in DC. Most of our work happens on East Coast time.
