About Oceanus

Oceanus Marine Technologies is building the operating platform for the modern maritime world.

Global trade runs on ships, and we’re redefining what’s possible at sea by leveraging modern technology.

We’re a small, hands-on team based in El Segundo building full-stack systems that perform in real operating conditions across vessels, ports, and fleets. We focus on practical, deployable technology that brings safety oversight, automation, and coordination to complex maritime environments.

Our founding team previously built and operated SpaceX’s Autonomous Spaceport Droneships, which are among the most advanced autonomous maritime systems ever deployed. Today, we work with leading U.S. operators to bring that same rigor and systems thinking to the next generation of maritime infrastructure.

About the Role

We're looking for a UI/UX Front-End Software Engineer to help build the interfaces powering intelligent, connected maritime operations. You will work hands-on to design and implement operator-facing web applications that visualize live vessel telemetry, sensor data, and mission-critical alerts across edge and cloud systems.

In this role, you will be responsible for turning complex maritime data into intuitive, high-performance dashboards that provide vessel operators with real-time situational awareness. You’ll thrive if you enjoy the challenge of high-density data visualization, low-latency state management, and building dependable production systems that perform in high-stakes operational environments.

Our team is rethinking how the maritime world operates. Come help us build the visual backbone for safer, smarter global shipping.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and build operator-facing web applications for real-time monitoring and control of maritime assets.

  • Develop high-fidelity data visualizations (telemetry, geospatial mapping, and sensor feeds) that remain performant under high data loads.

  • Implement low-latency data pipelines on the frontend to handle streaming vessel telemetry via WebSockets or similar protocols.

  • Bridge design and implementation by creating reusable UI components and design patterns that ensure consistency across the platform.

  • Collaborate with operators to understand field requirements, iterating on UI layouts to reduce cognitive load and improve operational efficiency.

  • Support deployments and testing in live operational environments, refining interfaces based on direct operator feedback.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical discipline; OR 2+ years of professional software engineering experience in lieu of a degree.

  • 2+ years of experience in front-end or UI/UX-focused software development.

  • Experience building and deploying production-grade, data-intensive web applications.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and modern frontend state management.

  • Experience with data visualization libraries such as D3.js, WebGL, Three.js, or Mapbox/Deck.gl.

  • Experience handling real-time streaming data and high-frequency updates on the frontend.

  • Proficiency with design tools (Figma) and a strong eye for functional UI/UX design.

  • Understanding of frontend performance profiling and optimization techniques.

  • Experience with version control, CI/CD workflows, and containerization (Docker).

  • Experience integrating with hardware, robotics, aerospace, defense, or IoT systems is a plus.

  • Familiarity with backend services (Python, Go, or Node.js) to help define efficient data schemas.

Work Environment
  • On-site with the team at our office in El Segundo, CA

  • Occasional travel to test sites or operator locations as needed

Compensation and Benefits

We are open to a wide range of experience levels. The expected salary range for this role is $130,000 - $210,000. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and scope of the role. We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Generous Equity participation

  • Fully stocked kitchen and catered lunch every day

  • Onsite EV charging

  • Flex Paid time off and company holidays

  • 401(k) traditional and roth options

  • Additional benefits that support your health, growth, and well-being

Why Oceanus, Why Now

Maritime operations are at the edge of a revolution. New connectivity and compute are finally unlocking remote monitoring, autonomy, and digitization.

Regulatory, economic, and geopolitical pressure is accelerating technology adoption, and U.S.-aligned infrastructure is more valuable than ever.

Oceanus is building on hard-won operational experience, including work on autonomous maritime systems supporting missions like SpaceX droneships, and have deep operator engagement with strong product-market alignment.

You will help form the technical core of a team transforming an industry that quite literally moves the world.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in CS, engineering, or related OR 2+ years professional software engineering experience
  • 2+ years of experience in front-end or UI/UX-focused software development
  • Experience building and deploying production-grade, data-intensive web applications
  • Experience with React and TypeScript
  • Experience with frontend state management and low-latency updates
  • Experience with data visualization libraries (D3.js, WebGL, Three.js, Mapbox, Deck.gl)
  • Experience handling real-time streaming data on the frontend (WebSockets or similar)
  • Proficiency with design tools (Figma) and strong functional UI/UX sensibility
  • Understanding of frontend performance profiling and optimization techniques
  • Experience with version control, CI/CD workflows, and containerization (Docker)
  • Familiarity with backend services (Python, Go, or Node.js) to define efficient data schemas
  • Experience integrating with hardware, robotics, aerospace, defense, or IoT systems
