About the SEAL team

The Search Engine and Landing Optimization team (SEAL) is focused on optimizing the furthest upfunnel landing pages for users. We experiment to improve the user experience on these pages and to shepherd users downfunnel to where Thumbtack can provide value. Along the way, we observe SEO best practices to ensure that these upfunnel pages rank strongly on search engines that will enable our users to find Thumbtack when it’s time to get help.

As the product owners for the pages users see at the beginning of their journey, there’s a lot we can do to pair users with value early in their search and to help get them to the right place.

Challenge

Many of the sorts of changes we’re making are unproven, and as a data driven company, we prefer to run experiments that vet our hypotheses. As an engineer, balancing places we can be scrappy to test ideas quickly  vs places we need to take more care to exercise engineering rigor and build things the right way is important. Given we have cross functional teams, if you like looking at user problems from a product or design perspective, you’ll be a great fit for this.

What you’ll need

If you don't think you meet all of the criteria below but still are interested in the job, please apply. Nobody checks every box, and we're looking for someone excited to join the team.

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in software engineering
  • Fluent in at least one major programming language and would be able to switch between multiple languages. We mainly use Go, Python  with Swift, Kotlin and Java for our mobile apps
  • Solid experience building software on top of relational & non-relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, DynamoDB
  • Write high quality, maintainable, testable code
  • You can break down complex problems rigorously and understand the tradeoffs necessary to deliver great, impactful products
  • You’re curious, you’re data-driven, you love to ask questions, and you think critically about problems
  • You love delivering value to your users and your teammates through your work

Bonus points if you have

  • Experience with test and learn culture or A/B testing as a practice
  • You’ve demonstrated your ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
