About this role

Grant Thornton is seeking an experienced Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) professional to join our nationally recognised specialist team, with opportunities available at Manager or Senior Manager level depending on your experience and ambitions.

This is a career-defining opportunity to work within a high-performing national SMSF practice, supporting a diverse client base while contributing to the continued growth and evolution of our offering. Whether you’re an established Manager ready to step into a broader leadership role, or a Senior Manager looking to progress toward Director, this role offers a clear and supported pathway aligned to your goals. You’ll be empowered to shape your career on your terms, build your profile within the firm and the market, and play a meaningful role in the future direction of our SMSF business.

This opportunity is based in our Sydney office, with hybrid and flexible working options available.

Key responsibilities

You’ll maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders while providing consultative advice and support on a range of SMSF matters, including:

  • Manage a portfolio of approx. 200 SMSFs, working closely with Partners, Directors and a National SMSF Team

  • Cultivate strong working relationships with our clients, providing proactive and practical solutions to address their unique challenges

  • Oversee and review the preparation and administration of SMSF compliance work, including financial statements, tax returns, activity statements, and associated compliance documentation

  • Liaise with external auditors and other bodies, such as the ATO and ASIC

  • Provide compliance advice to colleagues and escalate any SIS compliance issues to the Director / Partner as necessary

  • Assist with preparation of Statements of Advice (SOAs) on superannuation planning

  • Provide leadership to a team of Associates and Senior Associates, managing workflow and offering coaching to foster their growth and development

Skills and experience

With experience providing compliance and advisory services to SMSF clients, you are a service-oriented individual with a continuous improvement mindset: someone who takes pride in your work and centres the customer in everything you do, always looking to develop and refine your technical expertise.

Required

  • Relevant experience in public practice accounting, working directly with clients in the Australian SMSF sector

  • An interest in working on a national level, liaising with local interstate teams and clients

  • Strong written and spoken communication and interpersonal skills, including report-writing and presentation skills

  • Highly organised with solid analytical and critical reasoning skills, including the interpretation and reporting of financial data

  • Intermediate to advanced IT literacy, ideally including proficiency in the use of Class Super and associated data feeds

Desirable

  • Qualification(s) and / or professional accreditation(s) in a relevant discipline such as Business / Commerce, Accounting or Finance, or other relevant professional or overseas qualification(s)

If you’re interested in this role but don’t feel that you match every single one of our requirements, we would still love to hear from you and explore the unique skillset and attributes that you can bring to the team.
