Responsibilities include defining SLIs and SLOs, building dashboards and alerts, enhancing Grafana integrations, reducing operational toil, leading complex incidents, analyzing logs and source code, and implementing long-term reliability improvements. Summary Generated by Built In

As MISO’s Site Reliability Engineer, you’ll step into a role designed for someone who thrives at the intersection of incident response, observability, and software engineering.  You’ll help lead the team’s evolution from traditional support work into a true engineering discipline focused on application health, automation, and eliminating operational toil. The ideal candidate brings a strong software engineering foundation, understands complex system behavior, and knows how to define and measure what “healthy” looks like in production. With significant autonomy, you’ll build reusable automation, improve monitoring and visualization tools, and collaborate across teams to enhance the reliability of MISO’s internally developed applications. If you’re energized by solving hard problems, reducing noise, and creating systems that scale, this role offers the challenge and impact you’re looking for.

Your responsibilities as our Site Reliability Engineer include:

  • Partnering with engineering teams to define SLIs and SLOs and build the observability dashboards, alerts, and tooling needed to measure and maintain system health.
  • Developing reliable, intuitive performance and health visualizations that streamline troubleshooting for support analysts and significantly reduce time to resolution.
  • Strengthening application visibility by improving data integrations and visualizations across tools like Grafana, ensuring consistent, high‑quality insights for internally developed systems.
  • Aggressively identifying operational toil across support, infrastructure, and release processes, then design automation or process improvements that reduce overhead and scale team capacity.
  • Leading incident response for complex, multi‑team issues - diagnosing unknown systems, analyzing logs and source code, determining immediate fixes, and implementing long‑term reliability improvements.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with 6-8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong software engineering skills in languages such as Java, C#, Python, or similar, with the ability to quickly learn new technologies and contribute to end‑to‑end problem solving.
  • Proficiency with Windows and/or Linux command‑line tools, including PowerShell and automation‑focused utilities.
  • Experience working with containerized workloads in Kubernetes environments such as Azure AKS.
  • Familiarity with developer‑focused AI tools (for example, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate troubleshooting, coding, and automation.
  • Hands‑on experience with observability and logging tools such as Splunk, Grafana, Datadog, or New Relic, along with strong Git and GitHub Actions skills; knowledge of Oracle, MongoDB, or SQL‑based databases is a plus.
  • This role includes participation in an on‑call rotation approximately every five weeks to support critical application reliability.

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
